Six Picks: Cherry Poppin’ Daddies, The Ragbirds, ‘Ben-Hur,’ American songbook, free frozen yogurt, Gabriel & Dresden

Cherry Poppin' Daddies

Sounds funny to say that retro is no longer trendy, huh? Granted, vintage threads and jitterbug lessons aren't what they were when "Zoot Suit Riot" charted in 1997. But a killer horn section never goes out of style, and the Cherry Poppin' Daddies expand upon swing to embrace punk, ska and rockabilly, too. Ovation Lounge at Green Valley Ranch, 2300 Paseo Verde Parkway, is a great fit for them at 8 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $25-$43.50; call 1-800-745-3000.

The Ragbirds

Why The Ragbirds? Because there's not enough bands with a tattooed chick playing accordion and singing about knocking bullies on their butts. See them at 9 p.m. Tuesday at E-String Bar and Grill, 2301 W. Sunset Road, Henderson. Tickets are $10; call 437-8764.

'Ben-Hur'

It's Academy Awards season ... and what better way to celebrate than with epic 11-time Oscar champ "Ben-Hur" (1959), starring Charlton Heston in the title role? After a million-dollar restoration, "Ben-Hur" returns to the great big screen -- the South Point's XD screen -- at 2 and 7 p.m. through Feb. 9. It should be right at home there; "Ben-Hur" was filmed in panoramic MGM Camera 65, one of the widest of the wide-screen processes, so there's plenty of room for spectacular cast-of-thousands action scenes.

Evening of standards

Combine the Great American Songbook with a pair of talented songbirds and you've got "Love is Here to Stay," an evening of standards delivered by KT Sullivan and Mark Nadler at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Historic Fifth Street School Auditorium, 401 S. Fourth St. Music by the immortals -- George and Ira Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Harold Arlen, Richard Rodgers (with both Lorenz Hart and Oscar Hammerstein) -- is on the program by the cabaret-style crooners. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door. Call 229-3515.

The San Francisco progressive-house duo (Josh Gabriel and Dave Dresden) write enchanting, original songs (such as "Tracking Treasure Down"), often with female vocalists. They've remixed songs for scores of stars, from the Killers to Shiny Toy Guns.
