Six Picks: Comedy, music, brunch and ‘Salmon Fishing’

Brad Garrett

Brad Garrett's new venue at the MGM Grand will still have that new comedy club smell, unless you're the first one to spill a beer in a booth at the cozy new room with a red-curtain, retro vibe. But if you do, remember the tall guy is quite the insult comic these days. Garrett headlines the new comedy club that carries his name through Wednesday. Call 891-7777 for ticket info.

Galactic

Their sound is a lot like the gumbo of their native New Orleans: They throw a whole bunch of crap in the same pot, and somehow it all comes together real tasty like. That's the jazz, hip-hop and electronica-inflected kitchen-sink funk of Galactic. Get some at 9 p.m. Sunday at the Hard Rock Cafe on the Strip, 3771 Las Vegas Blvd. South. Tickets are $34.50 in advance, $39.50 day of show; call 733-7625.

'Salmon Fishing'

Lasse Hallstrom directed "Chocolat." Simon Beaufoy won an Oscar for his "Slumdog Millionaire" script. But they're off to even more exotic, whimsical climes with the comedy "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen," which opens today. Emily Blunt stars as a sheik's representative on an upstream journey to convince Britain's leading fisheries expert (Ewan McGregor) that the desert is a perfect spot for the title sport.

'Viaggo Musicali'

Set sail with the High Cs -- tenors Mark Thomsen, Antonio Esclapes and Marco Varela -- on a welcome-to-spring "Viaggo Musicali" with ports of call ranging from opera to Latin music to pop, Broadway and standards. The musical voyage embarks at 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday at the Winchester Cultural Center, 3130 McLeod Drive. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 on the day of the show; call 455-7340 for more information.

Border Brunch

The beautifully sunny and warm weather of late has led throngs of Las Vegas residents and visitors outdoors to enjoy it. Here's yet another reason: the newly expanded Border Brunch, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekends at Border Grill at Mandalay Bay, 3950 Las Vegas Blvd. South. New dishes include a bacon-jalapeno PBJ, Mexican chocolate pancakes and Peruvian shrimp and grits. The all-you-cat-eat small-plates brunch is $29.99 per person, plus tax and tip. Add bottomless mimosas for $5 more.

Skylar Grey

Skylar Grey is making the rounds of performing at Vegas clubs. In early March, the hit pop singer of "Invisible" celebrated her 26th birthday with appearances and performances at clubs Lavo and Tao. Tonight, she's back in Vegas to sing at Rain nightclub at the Palms.
