Six Picks: Meiko, Polica, ‘Jaws,”La Cage,’ Wine & Spirits, Kaskade

Meiko

The latest disc from indie folk chanteuse Meiko is titled "The Bright Side," and it lives up to its name with a winsome, ever-earnest pop whimsy that warms the blood like a sunny day. Bask in the radiance at 9 p.m. today at the Hard Rock Cafe on the Strip, 3771 Las Vegas Blvd. South. Tickets are $15; call 733-7625.

Polica

Earlier in the year, Bon Iver frontman Justin Vernon called dusky, dramatic Minneapolis indie pop rockers Polica "The best band I've ever heard." Jay-Z digs 'em too. See if they warrant your endorsement as well at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Boulevard Pool at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, 3708 Las Vegas Blvd. South. Tickets are $20; call 698-7000.

'Jaws'

Just when you thought it was safe to go back into movie theaters, "Jaws" kicks off the next installment of Cinemark's Classics Series, with showtimes at 2 and 7 p.m. Thursday at Sam's Town, Santa Fe Station, South Point and Suncoast. Future movies in the series are "High Noon" (Aug. 30), "Doctor Zhivago" (Sept. 6), "Chinatown" (Sept. 13), "The Bridge on the River Kwai" (Sept. 20) and "The African Queen" (Sept. 27).

'La Cage aux Folles'

It's rather gaudy, but it's also rather grand ... and it's the only show in Broadway history to follow a best musical Tony Award with two best revival Tonys. It's "La Cage aux Folles" (music and lyrics by "Hello, Dolly!" and "Mame" legend Jerry Herman), and you've got three more days to catch the act (7:30 tonight, 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday) at The Smith Center's Reynolds Hall, 361 Symphony Park Ave. Tickets ($27-$141) are available at 749-2000 or www.thesmithcenter.com.

Wine & Spirits

Sessions on cachaca and wine blending, brunch with an international array of sparkling wines and Chef Hubert Keller, dinner with Chef Vincent Pouessel, an intimate beachside dessert party and more are part of Mandalay Bay Wine & Spirits Weekend today through Sunday at the resort on the south end of the Strip. Ticket prices start at $100, and packages are available. For tickets and more information, visit www.MandalayBay.com or call (877) 305-3136.

Kaskade

DJ-producer Kaskade performs Saturday at Marquee nightclub at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. Last week, he implied in a Wall Street Journal interview he has turned down big stars who asked to collaborate: "I see some of my colleagues making some choices that I definitely wouldn't, you know? I'm very satisfied with where my music's at and I don't feel the need to have any more limelight. I don't need to be the star or anything." Too late, Kaskade, the limelight is yours.
