Strip Tips: Get sheared; see some art

This weekend, donate your hair or your money for cancer research, then head over to The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas to check out a unique art exhibit. Make yourself a star with your kids by taking them to meet actress and singer Paige O'Hara.

Go bald

Give up your hair for a good cause Saturday. Several Strip businesses are hosting head-shavings to raise money for the St. Baldrick's Foundation for Cancer Research. From 1 to 11 p.m., New York-New York's Brooklyn Bridge will be the site of an outdoor festival with head-shaving stations, free entertainment and food and drink specials. Kids can get their faces painted until 6 p.m. Balloon artists and other entertainers will be on hand. Attendance is free. Nine Fine Irishmen is giving away goody bags filled with a roller coaster pass, T-shirt, hat and a free pint of Guinness or Jameson cocktail to adult (over 21) hair donors. Ri Ra at the Shoppes in Mandalay Place is also hosting a head-shaving. At noon, dancers from "Fantasy" will be on hand to handle the shears as celebrity "shavers." The fundraising comes in the form of donations or sponsorships of shavees, so if you want to sponsor a participant, visit newyorknewyork.com/stbaldricks12. Or, participants can donate a minimum of $50.

'Untitled
(Bedroom)'

Leor Grady, The Cosmopolitan's current artist-in-residence, will close out his exhibit with personal appearances through Sunday. Grady, who was born in Israel but makes his home in New York City, installed an exhibit in P3 Studio called "Untitled (Bedroom)." The whole studio has been transformed into one giant, comfy bed complete with walls of pillows and sheets. Art-curious people can come and hang out and ask Grady anything, including "what the heck does this mean?" He will be in P3 Studio nightly from 6 to 11.

'Belles by Belle'

Disney fans know Paige O'Hara as the voice of Belle in the animated film "Beauty and the Beast." But she's also a local artist. O'Hara will be at Renaissance Galleries in the Shoppes at the Palazzo on Saturday to show off her series of paintings, "Belles by Belle," based on her favorite scenes from the movie.

She will mingle with fans and sign and personalize all artwork purchased during her appearance from noon to 6 p.m. 732-3638.

Question

There are plenty of topless shows on the Strip, so why aren't there any strip clubs on the Strip?

If you don't know the difference between a topless show on the Strip and topless dancers in strip clubs, you've probably never been to a strip club. A topless showgirl in "Jubliee!" is not going to march into the audience and sit in your lap, whereas a topless dancer at a strip club just might. For the right price. If that's your thing, there's an entire district zoned for that sort of entertainment called the adult use overlay district. It was created in May 2003, and it's not on the Strip. The "M1 Zone" is in an industrial area and contains this adult use overlay district where topless dancers can give stage shows and lap dances to patrons. The Strip is zoned H1, strictly a resort/hotel district.
