Summerlin promotes active lifestyle

With the start of the new year comes resolutions for getting fit and living a healthier lifestyle. For Summerlin residents, there are many options for getting fit thanks to an abundance of recreational amenities within the master-planned community, including more than 150 miles of the Summerlin trail system, more than 150 neighborhood and village parks that are home to tennis courts, basketball courts, baseball and softball fields and playgrounds, as well as nine public and private golf courses.

"It's that time of year when many are recommitting themselves to getting or staying fit," said Julie Cleaver, vice president of Summerlin. "Since the community's inception, Summerlin has been designed to encourage and accommodate an active, healthy lifestyle. In addition to Summerlin's vast outdoor amenities, the community boasts four community centers, which offer group fitness classes including Pilates, weight training and martial arts year-round. So everyone, regardless of the time of year, can maintain a healthy lifestyle."

Some of Summerlin's many special events are also geared toward fitness, including Tour de Summerlin and the Summerlin Half Marathon. The Summerlin trail system, comprised of four types of trails, is one of the community's most popular features, providing miles of uninterrupted and varied scenery for jogging, walking and cycling.

"My son and I run on the street-side trails often," said Peter Yee, who moved with this wife and three sons to Summerlin in 2014. "On long weekend runs, my loop takes me from my home in The Willows village to The Mesa and up to The Paseos using the parks at each village for a water break. The wide and beautifully landscaped trails provide safe paths for family walks and other activities. I love the scent of olive trees or rosemary bushes while running."

While the community's two existing outdoor pools remain closed through the winter, residents don't let cooler temperatures stop them from enjoying the parks and recreational leagues starting this month and running through spring. Throughout the year, Summerlin residents can take tennis and swim classes or join softball leagues, tennis teams and swim teams which are hosted by the Summerlin Council. The addition of the indoor aquatic center, which will open this year in Faiss Park, and The Vista Community Pool are examples of how Summerlin creates opportunities for children and adults to have fun and stay healthy.

"For Summerlin residents, there are many options for exercise thanks to the community's varied and numerous amenities, not to mention the community's proximity to Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area where many valley residents rock climb, cycle and mountain bike, Cleaver said. "Summerlin isn't just a master-planned community; it's a way of life. Staying active is the foundation of the Summerlin lifestyle."
