Beyond Basic

Sarah Michelle Gellar makes black and white not so black and white. The actress formerly known as "Buffy" promotes her latest movie, "The Air I Breathe," in an ensemble that reminds us how sweet simplicity can be. Sometimes it's more about what you don't do that makes you a "do."
She doesn't bury her look under excessive accessories. She hardly has any to speak of. Gellar doesn't seek our attention with flashy colors, either. She sticks to two basics. The last but most important thing she didn't do was slip into a slinky number in the middle of winter. Thank you, Gellar, for practicing practicality.
Although her coat certainly draws the eye, it's the actress' pencil skirt that steals the show. The rise, combined with the horizontal, Herve Leger-like cut, makes it a showstopper. Gellar looks seductive without trying too hard. And we'd like to give a standing ovation to the curves the high waist lends this otherwise curveless starlet.
The coat deserves a tip of the hat because it does exactly what an excellent outerwear piece should. On its own, the plaid pattern and long hem make a strong, chic statement. And it promises versatility. For an altogether different look, she could button up the coat and fasten a wide belt over it.
The last two pieces -- her black, low-cut blouse and no-fuss black pumps -- finish this beyond-basic look. For ways to copy Gellar's look, take a look at the items we dug up.
