As observed during the economic aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, when women hit on hard times they hit the cosmetics counters. This was the conclusion Leonard Lauder, chairman of Estee Lauder Companies, made after noticing a significant escalation of lipstick sales during that time.
