Singing a New Song

The smallest things can make the biggest difference. Case in point, Katharine McPhee's grape-colored clutch here. Did we say the smallest things? Maybe we should be more specific. Because it's an accessory and not an actual garment, the elegant handbag usually sits on the sidelines. A clutch of this size and in this eye-popping color, however, doesn't exactly warm the bench; it's the star player.
When toting such a look-at-me item, the rest of the ensemble should speak in whispers as McPhee demonstrates with her mocha jumper and shirt to match. With the exception of a medium-sized cocktail ring, the rest of the former "American Idol" contestant's accessories lay low. Her multi-strand necklace and pointy pumps keep things interesting without competing for attention with a handbag so oversized it takes more of a firm grip than a clutch to grasp.
We've put together a few comparable items to mimic the songstress' look. If you have a killer accessory (such as this patent leather clutch from Nordstrom) and you want to give it the spotlight it deserves, consider these background pieces.
