The Great Supermodel Debate
April 4, 2008 - 9:00 pm
In the late '80s and early '90s, everyone knew what a supermodel was and which models were fortunate enough to carry the title. Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, Stephanie Seymour and Linda Evangelista -- who famously said she wouldn't get out of bed for anything less than $10,000 -- all enjoyed the super status. Before them, Elle Macpherson, Iman, Cheryl Tiegs and Christie Brinkley held the prestigious distinction. Nowadays, it's not so clear.
With Janice Dickinson becoming famous for declaring herself "the first supermodel" and the celebrity influence taking models off magazine covers, the definition isn't so cut and dry anymore. Does a gallop down a designer runway constitute the title? A major cosmetics campaign? Victoria's Secret Angel wings?
To clear up the confusion, we asked five modeling and talent agencies in town to offer their definitions. Take a look at the rundown, as well as a few local names who could be well on their way to earning the moniker.
