Robb & Stucky offers free design seminars

Robb & Stucky Interiors at Town Square Las Vegas is offering residents a chance to enhance their design skills with several in-store seminars throughout July and August. The Thursday afternoon seminars will focus on a variety of topics including how to stage your home for sale, eco-friendly design and working with an open floor plan.

"Set the Stage to Sell Your Home" will be presented Thursday. During the session, Ellie Stanisci, design director, and designers Jenni Johnson and Michele Hidalgo-Stone will share simple and cost-effective ways to prepare your home to sell and make it stand out from others on the market.

Environmentally friendly products and services will be the focus of "Green Is Not Just a Color" on July 24. During the presentation, Stanisci will be joined by designers Amber Schofield and Renee Marmie.

On Aug. 7, Stanisci and Hidalgo-Stone will present "Design for Open Floor Plans." Participants will learn techniques to make the best use of the kitchen/great room area, exploring everything from cabinetry layout to furniture placement and proper lighting.

The Aug. 21 session will provide participants with the opportunity to meet the store's designers and challenge them with design dilemmas. Those attending are asked to bring their floor plans, fabric swatches, paint colors or photographs of specific rooms for expert advice. During the session, Stanisci will be joined by designers Lee Lundquist and Kellie Miller.

All the seminars are set to begin at 2 p.m. They are free and open to the public.

Reservations are requested and can be made by calling 531-0539.

Robb & Stucky Interiors is located at 6521 Las Vegas Blvd. South.

Laslo to be honored as Design Icon at market

World Market Center Las Vegas will honor Larry Laslo of Larry Laslo Designs as a Design Icon during the Summer 2008 Las Vegas Market, which begins July 28.

Laslo will discuss highlights of his life as a designer and sources of his inspiration during a special presentation scheduled at 2:30 p.m. July 31. He also plans to share insights into the business of design.

Laslo has designed interiors that have graced the editorial pages of numerous magazines and he is recognized in New York City for the interior design of Takashimaya's flagship store on Fifth Avenue and the highly regarded look and feel of Bergdorf Goodman.

Laslo also has created furniture collections for John Widdicomb, Ferguson Copeland and Directional; china for Mikasa and Royal Limoges; lighting for Frederick Cooper; art for Rosenbaum; and pottery for Haeger to name just a few. He takes his inspiration from the world around him and translates these surroundings into a new definition of "livable contemporary." For Laslo, contemporary means timeless.

Laslo is known as much for his sharp wit and colorful stories as he is for his designs. He said he even plans to share stories about "crazy clients" and stories of his work on projects in New York City, Mexico City, Aspen, Beverly Hills and the Hamptons.

"I am part psychiatrist, part lover, part husband and part designer," Laslo said. "The families I work for become my family. I am doing third and fourth houses for them." He joked, "The first house is hard; just like the first marriage."

After the lecture, The Robert Allen Group will honor Laslo with a reception from 4-6 p.m. in Robert Allen-Beacon Hill's new showroom in Building C.

The showroom will feature his fabric collection, Larry Laslo Designs for Robert Allen, which has more than 250 fabrics, as well as preview his future collection of upholstery and window fabrics, and new trim collection.

World Market Center Las Vegas created the Design Icon lecture series to allow design legends to share their stories and experience while inspiring future designers. During the last Las Vegas Market, Vladimir Kagan was honored.

Gaining control over this annual weed is not easy to do

To make sure it doesn’t return you have to interrupt the seed-to-flowering-plant cycle at least for a couple of years and fill the voids with something competitive.

Why did my bird of paradise plants quit blooming?

They were in bloom when we planted them five or six years ago, and they bloomed the following year as well. But they have not bloomed again.
