Lighting designer to speak at First Friday

Well-known lighting designer Brian Orter will be the guest speaker at June's First Friday event for industry professionals at the Las Vegas Design Center at World Market Center.

Orter's presentation, "Waking Up Architecture," will take place from 10-11:30 a.m. Friday on the 16th floor of World Market Center's Building B, 475 S. Grand Central Parkway.

"Whether it's retail, residential or commercial, focusing and adjusting the lighting is where the architecture wakes up," said Orter, who also is a photographer. "Using filters, proper lamping and aiming the lights where you need them brings the architecture to life."

Orter is the design director of Johnson Light Studio, a high-end architectural lighting design firm in Manhattan. He first became interested in lighting design while studying theatrical design at Edward R. Murrow High School in Brooklyn. He went on to study theatrical lighting and design at Purchase College.

During his more than 15 years in the industry, Orter has worked on some of the most highly regarded architectural projects in the world, including nightclubs, hotels, restaurants and skyscrapers.

During his presentation, he will share ideas for creating a "story" for each design, design development, determining the placement of coves, ceiling fixtures and colors, and the types of finishes.

The day's events also will include showroom specials and hospitality.

Reservations are requested and can be made by e-mailing LVDC@LVDesignCenter.com or calling 599-3093.

Why did my bird of paradise plants quit blooming?

They were in bloom when we planted them five or six years ago, and they bloomed the following year as well. But they have not bloomed again.
