Japanese flower group to start new season
The Ikenobo Ikebana Nevada Chapter, which specializes in the Japanese art of flower arranging, will begin its new season of workshops Sept. 13.
The traditional Shoka style of flower arranging was developed by Ikenobo Senjo near the end of the 18th century to the beginning of the 19th century. According to a group spokesperson, Shoka is a scalene triangular composition with the shin, soe and tai as the main branches symbolizing heaven, man and Earth, and representing the universe.
Shin, the central branch, represents truth, faith and fidelity. Soe means support and it joins the principal part. Tai means finishing touch and stability. All other branches are supporting stems to the three main lines.
Jiyuka, or free style, is creative work. This style may express a feeling, mood or theme in a naturalistic or abstract way.
The first workshop of the season will focus on the Shoka style in the morning and the Jiyuka style in the afternoon. Fresh flowers will be used for both sessions.
