Tiles add style, protect garage floors

OK, ladies and gents ... get your garage ready.

Add some style and protect your floor. On The Edge Marketing has introduced a nifty way to get things covered.

The auto-themed interlocking floor tiles present a hassle-free way to protect garage flooring with an easy-to-clean and stain-resistant barrier. Get your feet, and your vehicles, up off the floor.

Not to mention, they look pretty cool.

The polypropylene tiles are resistant to stains or damage from chemicals, petroleum products, grease, brake fluid and anti-freeze. They easily snap together and require no adhesives or tools.

And, let's face it, for many folk the garage is just as an important gathering place as the kitchen, so it should be just as functional and comfortable. Add a few bar stools on top of the tiles and turn any garage into a cozy yet functional oasis.

These tiles also serve to cover unsightly, cracked, stained or just plain boring floors. The flooring is available in red, blue, yellow, white, alloy, graphite and black and carries a 10-year limited warranty.

Retail prices are $300 for a 40-square-foot kit and $10 for individual 12-inch by 12-inch tiles. Go ahead, mix and match and have fun. For car enthusiasts, add a few Dodge, Ford, Mustang or Chevrolet tiles into the mix.

Film makes changing scenes a snap

Decorating a home should be a fun and ongoing process, not a lifelong commitment to the same old look.

"Refreshing the look of a room is as important as refreshing your wardrobe," said Laura Day, who has worked as a designer on the television show "Trading Spaces" on TLC. "The look of a home should change with your life -- by the season, by the mood and by necessity."

One easy way to do this is with window film.

GILA Window Film is ideal for home decorators who want to express themselves. It applies easily for a simple, quick change for most clean glass surfaces. When another creative idea comes along, it is easily removable.

Not only does window film enhance the look of your home, it can also be used to block out unwanted outside views and provide privacy. It blocks up to 99 percent of ultraviolet rays to help protect your furnishings.

The film can simulate many custom glass looks, including stained glass, textured or etched, and it is available in a multitude of designs.

"Window treatments, especially window film, can have a powerful impact on a room," Day said. "GILA Window Film offers simplicity and streamlined design that make for a sophisticated interior. GILA allows home decorators to personalize the look of a room on a budget."

And it doesn't have to just be your windows. Use your imagination.

"By adding window film to the glass of picture frames, a room can take on an entirely new look and feel. With a roll of window film, a plain glass table can be transformed into something unique in just minutes," Day said.

Window film also can be used to dress up a bathroom vanity or placed on cupboards to camouflage what's stored within. In a pinch, place some on the table as place mats or wrap a glass vase to fit the occasion.

The film comes in several sizes that can be cut easily to custom-fit a variety of glass and window surfaces. Rolls cost $17-$30 each or about $1 a square foot.

Gaining control over this annual weed is not easy to do

To make sure it doesn’t return you have to interrupt the seed-to-flowering-plant cycle at least for a couple of years and fill the voids with something competitive.

Why did my bird of paradise plants quit blooming?

They were in bloom when we planted them five or six years ago, and they bloomed the following year as well. But they have not bloomed again.
