Payne creates art deco-like Apollo collection for Powell

A casual contemporary dining room, home entertaining cabinetry and occasional pieces are all part of Powell's new Apollo collection, the latest addition to the Michael Payne line.

"Modern simplicity characterizes this handsome group," Payne said. "The design is reminiscent of the art deco period, a design style that continues its popularity."

Payne, host and interior designer of the television show "Designing for the Sexes," has been creating furniture designs for Powell since April 2005. He graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles' interior design program in 1980 after a 10-year career in the computer industry.

"The Apollo collection features an interesting transitional cabriolet flare. The legs of each piece are finished in black and shaped in a curved taper," said Anne Russell, Powell's marketing manager. "The tables and cabinet tops are finished in walnut and rise above the surface of the legs with decorative chrome balls that give the appearance of a floating top. Several pieces feature glass tops and shelves."

Among the highlights in the collection is a vertical china cabinet that doubles as a media tower. It has a raised walnut finish and glass doors and shelves. Openings in the back panel for audio and video equipment wire management provide a practical touch and functionality.

A dining pedestal in the raised walnut finish offers a choice of glass tops, while accompanying side chairs in a black finish with black faux suede upholstery give the group its art deco feel.

The home entertainment offerings include a plasma television stand that features a clear, tempered 10-millimeter glass top supported by four chrome balls sitting on a walnut-finished cabinet. The base has a black-finished skirt and legs, and includes a lower shelf with an X chrome-plated base. Two side drawers sport chrome knobs and the center provides storage for media components.

Accent and occasional pieces are included in the collection as well. They include cocktail, end and sofa tables and a plant stand.

Founded in 1968, Powell has been a leading importer of design-driven furnishings for nearly 40 years.
