Soft and sleek

Chris and Reed Kingsley, the brothers who co-founded Brownstone Furniture, take pride in manufacturing bedroom and dining room sets that add grace and beauty to any setting.

Their designs are warm and inviting, consider the needs of their users and transcend the lines between classic and contemporary styles.

But the bedroom and dining room are not the only rooms in the home. So it comes as no surprise that Brownstone Furniture is branching into upholstery.

The Richmond, Calif.-based company debuted its first collection during this week's Las Vegas Market at the World Market Center.

"We've applied our design, the Brownstone concept of classic contemporary, to upholstery," said Reed Kingsley. "It's not too edgy, but it is updated."

The style blends the classic look of traditional furniture with the clean lines of contemporary design.

"It's not truly contemporary to what I call a sterile level," Kingsley said. "It's got a grasp of some historical influences of design with midcentury modern and art deco traces.

The look is evident in the new Viceroy collection, which features a sleek sofa and chair with tufted backs, streamlined curved arms, deep seating and tapered legs.

The sofa has a suggested retail price of $1,485, while the chair is priced at $910.

Currently, the pieces are upholstered in a soft-yet-sturdy, velvety pool blue microfiber.

Kingsley said plans call for them to expand their fabric offerings and they hope to have about 100 fabrics in stock. This will enable Brownstone to ship the upholstery in about four weeks.

Additionally, as the upholstery offerings grow, they plan to start a special order program where customers can select or provide their own fabrics.

Kingsley said it was an easy decision to expand the company's product lineup.

"It's a natural progression; it's where we want to be and grow," Reed Kingsley said. "We want to be a full-service company so that we can provide all elements to a furniture line."

According to Kingsley, upholstery makes up about 30 percent of all furniture sales, so it made good business sense to expand their repertoire as well.

"We've been researching the right product for the customer, focusing on producing a good quality product with many options for a good price," he said.

As a result of the upholstery introductions, the company also is expanding its occasional collections.

New introductions include the Georgetown, Bancroft and Hampton collections.

Georgetown is basically a reproduction of an antique the brothers spotted in the upper east side of New York. It was a purely midcentury modern piece that was unique but still had classic values. Featuring V-like legs, the tables have a walnut finish over a solid wood edge on the round tops and a base of solid mahogany.

The side table retails for $520 and the coffee table has a suggested price of $820.

Bancroft, which also offers dining and bedroom furnishings, is highlighted by its squared off, intersecting U-shaped legs. The tables have cherry veneers on mahogany solids and are done in a black cherry finish.

Included in the collection are a round side table and rectangular coffee and console tables.

Occasional pieces in the Hampton collection are modeled after the dining table, Kingsley said. The collection is distinguished by its rain-washed finish that showcases the wood's cathedral grains.

"We actually buff down the soft rings of the wood so the hard rings come up. The process creates a texture like rain-worn timber," Kingsley said.

To make sure it doesn’t return you have to interrupt the seed-to-flowering-plant cycle at least for a couple of years and fill the voids with something competitive.

Why did my bird of paradise plants quit blooming?

They were in bloom when we planted them five or six years ago, and they bloomed the following year as well. But they have not bloomed again.
