Only one Nevada teen competing in national pageant

An unusual offer to have two Nevada teens compete side by side in Miss America’s Outstanding Teen Pageant did not come to pass, leaving only one Nevada contestant in Orlando, Fla., this week.

Last week, national pageant officials confirmed “scoring irregularities” resulted in the wrong winner being named Miss Nevada’s Outstanding Teen. The proposed answer was to declare “two winners” and to invite the second one to compete separately in the national pageant with previously announced winner Amy Smith of Henderson. But on Tuesday, a statement from Steve Frocchi, the pageant’s vice president of marketing and business development, said, “We have one representative from each state.”

A July 20 email shared with the Review-Journal, attributed to Donna Bozarth, chairwoman of the pageant’s national board, said the actual winner is Haleyann Hart and Smith is runner-up.
