Activities scheduled for Free Fishing Day

If you are looking to for something fun that your entire family can do together in the outdoors, you may want take advantage of Free Fishing Day on June 9. This is a day set aside by the State of Nevada so people of all experience levels can enjoy the sport of fishing without having to buy a fishing license in order to fish.

As part of Free Fishing Day, the Nevada Department of Wildlife, in cooperation with Nevada State Parks, Bass Pro Shop and Wal-Mart, will be hosting a day of fishing-related activities at Floyd Lamb State Park. Festivities will kick off at 9 a.m. with a class on the basics of fishing. Steve White, a certified fly-casting instructor, will follow that at 10 a.m. with a fly-fishing workshop, and at 11 a.m., Bob Gaudet will provide a seminar on striped bass fishing at Lake Mead. Gaudet will also have a samples of lures used to catch stripers.

Each child between the ages of 2 and 15 will receive a ticket for a door prize that will give them an opportunity to win one of more than 100 prizes, from rods and reels to tackle boxes and other outdoor items. During the fly-fishing seminar, a complete fly-fishing setup will be given away, and those who attend the striper seminar will have a chance to win a striper rod and reel.

For those who don't have their own fishing gear, NDOW will have free loaner equipment (rods and reels) available for checkout (kids first, limited quantities). Registration will begin at 8 a.m. on the lawn in front of the old hay barn. For more information, contact NDOW at 486-5127, Ext. 3503 or Ext. 3850 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

VOLUNTEER NEEDED

Applicants sought for boating committee

The Clark County Manager's office is encouraging recreational boaters and others who share an interest in improving boating opportunities in Southern Nevada to get involved by applying for a seat on the Clark County Boating Facilities and Safety Committee. This volunteer committee advises the County Commission on the expenditure of marina fuel tax dollars generated at marinas within the Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

Four of the seven spots on the committee will become vacant in July when terms expire for those currently filling those positions. Members of the committee serve two-year terms. Those who are interested in serving on the committee can request an application by calling Arlene Chapman in the County Manager's Office (455-3530). Completed applications must be returned to that office on the sixth floor of the County Government Center no later than 1 p.m. June 21.

Since its inception in 1986, more than $1 million garnered through the marine fuel tax has paid for safety programs, equipment and educational projects that promote boating and water safety on Lake Mead, Lake Mohave and the Colorado River.

The committee typically meets six times each year and does so at the Clark County Government Center, 500 S. Grand Central Parkway in Las Vegas.
