Fishing Report, Aug. 9

■ LAKE MEAD - Fishing has been good in the Vegas Wash and around the nearby islands. Most of the striped bass have been caught with top-water stuff or by jigging. Anglers also are finding some shad in the back of Vegas Wash, but not as many as last year, which would explain reports of skinny stripers. The beach area north of Hemenway has shut down, but anglers are catching fish along the lake side of the tires. In the upper basins, anglers have found success with cut baits and homemade chumming mixtures.

■ LAKE MOHAVE - Striper fishing remains slow near Cottonwood Cove, though some anglers have found success trolling with anchovies. Catfish reportedly are biting well. The bait of choice is the night crawler. Anglers also continue to find good bluegill action in the coves, and black bass are taking soft baits, with smallies dominating the catch. At Willow Beach, anglers are finding good action for stocked rainbows and also reeling in a few large stripers from there south to Monkey Hole.

■ LAUGHLIN - Striper action has picked up this week, with anglers reeling in several fish topping the 4-pound mark. Smaller stripers are being caught above the Avi resort bridge. Anglers looking for rainbow trout have found success with night crawlers near Rotary Park and in the Big Bend area.

■ URBAN PONDS - Nevada Department of Wildlife plans call for a catfish plant in mid-August. That will improve fishing at Floyd Lamb, Sunset and Veterans Memorial parks. Anglers will find action for bluegill at each of these parks, and largemouth bass at Floyd Lamb and Sunset.

■ KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA - Fishing pressure is low on area reservoirs. Anglers have been catching trout while fishing from the dams, but weedy conditions make landing fish a challenge. Largemouth bass are hitting top-water lures fished over the weeds. Be prepared to lose some tackle.

■ EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR - Late-summer weed growth is creating a challenge for shoreline and boat anglers, but for those willing to work, openings in the weed beds are catching stocked rainbow trout and some largemouth bass. Floating baits or mini-marshmallows coupled with worms will help keep bait out of the weeds.

■ ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR - Patient anglers have found fair to good fishing for crappie, largemouth bass and rainbow trout.
