The Mormon church has plans for three new temples in North America.
President Thomas S. Monson said Saturday the Utah-based Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will build temples in Meridian, Idaho, Fort Collins, Colo., and Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
The announcement was made in Salt Lake City during the faith's semiannual general conference.
Mormon temples are considered the most sacred places of worship for Latter-day Saints. Temples are open only to worthy church members. The towering white buildings are not used for regular Sunday services, but are instead used for marriages, proxy baptisms and other sacred ceremonies.
Mormons are gathering by the tens of thousands in Salt Lake City this weekend for the two-day conference. Millions more will participate in the proceedings via television, radio, satellite and Internet broadcasts.
