9/11 COMMEMORATIVE EVENTS

The Chancel Choir of First Presbyterian Church of Las Vegas and the Desert Chorale will present Gabriel Faure's "Requiem" at 3 p.m. Sept. 11 in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of 9/11. The church is at 1515 W. Charleston Blvd. A freewill offering will be accepted (384-4554).

The Interfaith Council of Southern Nevada will present "Interfaith Remembrance 10th Anniversary of 9/11" featuring keynote speaker Maureen Peckman, a member of the Nevada Commission on Homeland Security, at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 11 in the student union ballroom at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, 4505 S. Maryland Parkway. The free event will feature participation from various faiths throughout the community (895-9303).

The Islamic Society of Nevada, 4730 E. Desert Inn Road, will have a 9/11 Remembrance Service at 5:15 p.m. Sept. 11. The service will feature a candlelighting ceremony, and guest speakers will include the Rev. Gard Jameson, Interfaith Council of Southern Nevada; Daniel Bogden, U.S. attorney for the District of Nevada; and Aslam Abdullah, the Islamic Society of Nevada director. The service is open to the public.

The Peoples Valley Chorus and Green Valley Presbyterian Church will present "Brahms Requiem -- 9.11.01 Commemoration" at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 10 at 1798 Wigwam Parkway, Henderson. The event is free, although a freewill offering will be accepted (454-8484).

Gateway Arts Foundation will present "A Tribute to Our Country" at 3 p.m. Sept. 11 at Grace in the Desert Episcopal Church, 2004 Spring Gate Lane. The concert will feature the Kid Fiddlers, Vic Moea, Alex Christopher and others. Tickets are $15. For reservations, call 255-0695.

MUSIC

Green Valley Presbyterian Church, 1798 Wigwam Parkway, Henderson, will present a recital with Isadora Trinkle and Eugenie Burkett at 7:30 p.m. today. Admission is free, but a freewill offering will be accepted (454-8484).

EVENTS

The women of Holy Trinity A.M.E. Church will have events in celebration of their annual Women's Day. On Friday , the Rev. Almetha Thomas will share "The Woman Who Hauls Living Water" at 6 p.m. On Sept. 11, the Women's Day will be 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. The event will feature guest speaker Rita Howard at 10 a.m. and minister Lisa Franqui at 2:30 p.m., at 700 Lola Ave., North Las Vegas (877-0790).

The Youth Group of Green Valley Presbyterian Church will have a swap meet 7 a.m.-noon Sept. 10 at 1798 Wigwam Parkway, Henderson. The group is accepting donations to sell. For more information, call 454-8484.

The Jewish Community Center of Southern Nevada will present "Where Art Thou 2," featuring five artists displaying their artwork, at 7 p.m. Sept. 15 at Bar + Bistro at the Arts Factory, 107 E. Charleston Blvd. The fee is $18 per person, and $5 for high school students. The event is for ages 16 and older (794-0090).

The Extended Hands Cancer Ministry will have its annual Cancer Awareness Breakfast and Silent Auction 9-11:30 a.m. Sept. 17 at Silverstone Golf Club, 8600 Cupp Drive. Registration and the auction will begin at 8:30 a.m. The featured topic of the event will be "Triple Negative Breast Cancer." Tickets are $40 (531-6191).

MEETINGS

The Las Vegas Lay Dominicans will have their monthly meeting featuring prayer, formation activities and a Communion service, 10 a.m.-noon today at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Newman Community, 4765 Brussels St.

The Sathya Sai Baba Devotional Singing Group meets at 5 p.m. Sundays at 1128 Triumph Court (461-8655).

Hindu Temple & Jain Center of Las Vegas, 1701 Sageberry Drive, offers Balaji Abhishekam services at 10:45 a.m. the first Saturday of the month in the temple, and Aarti Pooja services at noon Sundays (304-9207).

CLASSES

The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Las Vegas, 3613 E. Lake Mead Blvd., will offer a free class on the principles and history of its liberal religious tradition 7-9 p.m. Sept. 10 (878-0443).

Reformation Lutheran Church, 580 E. St. Louis Ave., offers English as a Second Language classes at 9:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Saturdays (541-1952 or 732-2052).

Community Baptist Church, 245 E. Foster Ave., Henderson, offers a free reading program for all ages 7-9 p.m. Wednesdays (565-0071).

SINGLES GROUPS

The Jewish Community Center of Southern Nevada, Temple Sinai and Congregation Ner Tamid offer a variety of programs for Jewish singles of all ages in Las Vegas and Henderson. For details, call the Jewish Community Center at 794-0090, Temple Sinai at 254-5110 or Congregation Ner Tamid at 733-6292.

St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church has a singles luncheon for ages 60 and older the first Tuesday of the month at 4:30 p.m. at Black Mountain Grill, 11021 S. Eastern Ave., Henderson (796-1953).

New Life Christian Center has a singles meeting at 7 p.m. the second Friday of the month at 1229 E. Carson Ave. (387-5433).

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church sponsors a singles group for people 45 and older (228-8311, ext. 7333 or 7334).

Single Adults Learning Together, or SALT Ministries of CornerStone Christian Fellowship, meets at 6 p.m. Saturdays at 5825 W. Eldora Ave. (871-5050).
