Candidates sought for Nevada schools chief

CARSON CITY -- The search is under way for a new Nevada superintendent of public schools.

Education reforms sought by Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval and approved by the 2011 Legislature gives the governor -- instead of the elected Board of Education -- authority to appoint the state's schools chief.

The Board of Education will interview top candidates in public before recommending three for the governor's consideration. Sandoval hopes to make an appointment by March.

The new superintendent will replace Keith Rheault, who is retiring in April.

Applicants must have a master's degree in education or school administration and be "strongly committed" to education reform.

Experience in the classroom, working with English language learners and overseeing large budgets is also required.

Applications will be accepted through Dec. 30.
