Clark County School District benefactors recognized

The Clark County School District in 2010-11 took in a record $22 million in donations of goods, services and money from 700 businesses and organizations involved in the district's Community Partnership Program.

"It is the people power, the donation of time in programs such as PAYBAC, Focus School Project and the Stay in School Mentoring Project that enrich the lives of students," said Bridget Bilbray-Phillips, the district's partnership director.

PAYBAC connects professionals in the community to schools that want them as speakers. The Focus School Project began in 1989 and matches Clark County schools with business groups and other organizations to bring resources to needy students.

The partnership program began in 1983 as a trial, matching seven schools with seven businesses. Since then, it has grown to include hundreds of partnerships.

The donors will be honored at 7:30 a.m. today in The Mirage's Grand Ballroom A. Award recipients include local businesses, casinos, chambers of commerce, community groups, entertainers, higher-education institutions, and nonprofit and religious organizations.

The Blue Ribbon Award was instituted last year and will honor a community partner for their direct effect on student achievement. The award is named in memory of former Gov. Kenny Guinn, who was school district superintendent from 1969 to 1978.
