UNIVERSITY OF PHOENIX TO HOST BACK-TO-SCHOOL EVENT FOR TEACHERS

The University of Phoenix Las Vegas campus, 7455 W. Washington Ave., plans to host a back-to-school event from 9 to 11 a.m. Aug. 25 at its Teacher Resource Center. All local public, private and charter schoolteachers are welcome to attend.

The event will introduce teachers to free resources provided by the university, including books, science and math games and more. Teachers will also receive a schedule of upcoming educational workshops and classroom supplies.

LIBRARY SUMMER READING PROGRAM ENDS

More than 23,000 kids participated in the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District's summer reading program, checking out more than 825,000 books, audiobooks and educational DVDs.

The program ran from June 1 to July 27, and kids were encouraged to read at least 20 minutes per day to prevent reading comprehension loss from the previous school year. The library district also gave away new books, e-readers and Barnes & Noble gift cards to kids as prizes for reading.

WALMART AND SAM'S CLUB COLLECTING SCHOOL SUPPLIES

Communities in Schools of Nevada is collecting school supplies through August to be donated to at-risk students in the Clark County School District.

Collection bins will be at Walmart and Sam's Club checkout stations for shoppers to drop in items. Walmart also created a school pack it sells for $21 that includes a variety of school supplies and will go to a student in need.

Participating stores include Sam's Club, 8080 W. Tropical Parkway, and Walmart locations at 7200 Arroyo Crossing Parkway; 540 Marks St.; 5200 S. Fort Apache Road; and 2310 E. Serene Ave.

HARD ROCK CAFES HOST BOOK DRIVE THROUGH AUGUST

The Hard Rock Cafe at 3771 Las Vegas Blvd. South and inside the Hard Rock Hotel at 4475 Paradise Road are collecting books through August to donate to Spread the Word Nevada.

DISTRICT D BACK-TO-SCHOOL FAIR SET FOR TODAY

Clark County School District D and St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson plan to host a back-to-school fair from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Walnut Recreation Center, 3075 N. Walnut Road.

Vendors will be on hand to provide information and free school supplies, while they last, including more than 2,000 backpacks. The event will also celebrate the center's 10th anniversary.

'PAWN STARS' OLIVIA BLACK PLANS SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE

Olivia Black from the History Channel's "Pawn Stars" and the Gold & Silver Pawnshop plans to host a school supply drive benefiting Casa de Luz from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Wednesday at Artifice Bar & Lounge, 1025 S. First St.

Supplies needed include backpacks and book bags, notebooks, pens/pencils, erasers, rulers, glue sticks and scissors.

FREE READING AND MATH TUTORING AVAILABLE FOR K-5 STUDENTS

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas' America Reads/Counts Program are offering free reading and math tutoring for students in kindergarten through fifth grade. HENDERSON INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL APPOINTS NEW HEADMASTER

The Henderson International School, 1165 Sandy Ridge Ave., appointed a new headmaster, Seth W. Ahlborn, to begin the new school year Monday.

Ahlborn will supervise student enrollment, teacher recruitment and community outreach programs and is the former head of school at The Congressional Schools of Virginia and Chesapeake Academy in Irvington, Va., and dean at Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H.

Henderson's Parks and Recreation Department is offering early Safekey and Teen Scene registration open to all Henderson public elementary and middle school students. Safekey and Teen Scene are before- and after-school programs offering supervised recreational opportunities for kids.

GET A SPA TREATMENT, HELP STUDENTS

SOUTHERN HIGHLANDS PARK TO HOST BACK-TO-SCHOOL EVENT

The Andson Foundation and Changing Lives Community Fund plan to co-host the Back-2-Class Bash from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Goett Family Park, 10950 Southern Highlands Parkway.

The event will feature music, kids activities, raffle prizes, food and information about education, public safety and health. Backpacks and other school items will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis. Flu shots and vaccines will also be available.

LOCAL MALLS TO HOST BACK-TO-SCHOOL FAIRS THROUGH AUGUST

Cox Communications has two more back-to-school fairs scheduled this month.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at The Boulevard Mall, 3528 S. Maryland Parkway, the fair will feature informational booths to assist families with children returning to school Aug. 27. The Clark County School District is expected to have representatives present from the following departments: human resources, substitute services, support staff, facilities and zoning, food service, transportation, and school police. The Southern Nevada Health District will also provide immunizations for schoolchildren for a fee. Parents must bring their child's immunization records to receive this service.

A fashion show is planned for 11 a.m. to raise money for After-School All-Stars Las Vegas, which helps at-risk youths at 15 local middle and high schools. Models will be styled by fashion design students from the International Academy of Design and Technology in Henderson.

The final fair is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Galleria at Sunset mall, 1300 W. Sunset Road.

RAINBOW COMPANY TO HOST AUDITIONS FOR TRAINING CLASS AND 'TOM SAWYER'

The Rainbow Company Youth Theatre's Student Ensemble audition is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at the Charleston Heights Arts Center, 800 S. Brush St. The ensemble is a theater training program open to children 10 to 17.

Auditions for "Tom Sawyer" are scheduled for 1 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Charleston Heights Arts Center. Roles are available for those 10 or older. Performances are scheduled for Oct. 5-14.

Participants are encouraged to dress comfortably, and no prepared material is needed.

CITY OF LAS VEGAS HIRING HELPERS FOR safekey AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM

The city of Las Vegas is looking to fill more than 60 positions in its Safekey program, a before- and after-school recreational service for youths. Safekey is offered at 68 elementary schools in Las Vegas.

Positions available for the upcoming school year include site leader and site assistant. Positions average between 19 and 25 hours per week, ranging in pay from $10 to $12 per hour.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES DRIVES PLANNED

Nathan Adelson Hospice locations will serve as drop-off points for school supplies for students at Robert L. Taylor Elementary School, 144 Westminster Way in Henderson, and Sunrise Acres Elementary School, 211 28th St., through Aug. 22.

Among supplies needed are: backpacks, paper, crayons, markers, scissors, glue sticks, tissue, binders, colored pencils, rulers, paper towels, hand sanitizer and zip-close bags.

Items can be dropped off between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. at 4141 Swenson St. near East Flamingo Road and 3150 N. Tenaya Way at the corner of Cheyenne Avenue in the MountainView Medical Offices building. The donations will be delivered to the schools before the first day of classes Aug. 27.

UNIVERSITY OF PHOENIX OFFERS SCHOLARSHIPS TO ACTIVE, RETIRED MILITARY

The University of Phoenix, 7455 W. Washington Ave., and American Veterans, or AMVETS, a veterans education advocacy group, will award 50 scholarships worth $7,000 each to active-duty service members, veterans and eligible family members to pursue a degree from the University of Phoenix. Applications for the 2012 University of Phoenix AMVETS Scholarship are being accepted through Aug. 21.
