UNIVERSITY OF PHOENIX TO HOST BACK-TO-SCHOOL EVENT FOR TEACHERS

The University of Phoenix Las Vegas campus, 7455 W. Washington Ave., plans to host a back-to-school event from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at its Teacher Resource Center. All local public, private and charter schoolteachers are welcome to attend.

The event will introduce teachers to free resources provided by the university, including books, science and math games and more. Teachers will also receive a schedule of upcoming educational workshops and classroom supplies.

POETRY CONTEST OPEN TO HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS

Clark County high school students are invited to enter the Spark! poetry contest sponsored by the Vegas Valley Book Festival. Guidelines are available at vegasvalleybookfestival.org or at the Nevada Arts Council office at 2755 E. Desert Inn Road, Suite 155. The deadline for submission is at 5 p.m. Oct. 5.

Winners will receive cash prizes of $100, $200 and $300. Students will be judged on their original poems and their recitation at the festival Nov. 3.

Local Edward Jones branch offices are collecting school supplies through Aug. 31 to donate to the Clark County School District. Items being collected are pencils, pens, erasers, three-ring binders, rulers, crayons, scissors, colored pencils, notebooks, tape, glue sticks and notebook paper. HENDERSON OFFERS EARLY REGISTRATION FOR BEFORE- AND AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS

Henderson's Parks and Recreation Department is offering early Safekey and Teen Scene registration to all Henderson public elementary and middle school students. Safekey and Teen Scene are before- and after-school programs providing supervised recreational opportunities for kids.

MIDBAR KODESH TEMPLE TO HOST OPEN HOUSE sunday

AID FOR AIDS OF NEVADA DONATES SCHOOL SUPPLIES TO AFFECTED FAMILIES

Aid for AIDS of Nevada, or AFAN, distributed 50 backpacks with school supplies to children of families affected by HIV and AIDS. The kids, 5 to 15, are members of AFAN's Kids' Campus program, which launched this year to provide support and promote social interaction. The donation took place at AFAN's office, 1120 Almond Tree Lane.

WALMART AND SAM'S CLUB COLLECTING SCHOOL SUPPLIES

Communities in Schools of Nevada is collecting school supplies through August to be donated to at-risk students in the Clark County School District.

Collection bins will be at Walmart and Sam's Club checkout stations for shoppers to drop in items. Walmart also created a school pack it sells for $21 that includes a variety of school supplies and will go to a student in need.

Participating stores include Sam's Club, 8080 W. Tropical Parkway , and Walmart locations at 7200 Arroyo Crossing Parkway ; 540 Marks St. ; 5200 S. Fort Apache Road ; and 2310 E. Serene Ave .

HARD ROCK CAFES HOST BOOK DRIVE THROUGH AUGUST

The Hard Rock Cafes at 3771 Las Vegas Blvd. South and inside the Hard Rock Hotel at 4475 Paradise Road are collecting books through August to donate to Spread the Word Nevada, a nonprofit organization that makes monthly book donations at local elementary schools in low-income areas.

GALLERIA AT SUNSET MALL TO HOST BACK-TO-SCHOOL FAIR SATURDAY

Cox Communications' final back-to-school fair is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Galleria at Sunset mall, 1300 W. Sunset Road. The fair will feature informational booths to assist families with children returning to school Monday . The Clark County School District is expected to have representatives present from the following departments: human resources, substitute services, support staff, facilities and zoning, food service, transportation and school police. The Southern Nevada Health District will also provide immunizations for schoolchildren for a fee. Parents must bring their child's immunization records to receive this service.

CITY OF LAS VEGAS HIRING HELPERS FOR SAFEKEY AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM

The city of Las Vegas is looking to fill more than 60 positions in its Safekey program, a before- and after-school recreational service for youths. Safekey is offered at 68 elementary schools in Las Vegas.

Positions available for the upcoming school year include site leader and site assistant. Positions average between 19 and 25 hours per week, ranging in pay from $10 to $12 per hour.

Applicants must be 18 or older and have a high school or GED diploma, among other requirements. Applications are available at lasvegasnevada.gov/employment or at the Safekey office at 1651 S. Buffalo Drive. For more information, call 229-3399.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES DRIVE PLANNED THROUGH WEDNESDAY

Nathan Adelson Hospice locations will serve as drop-off points for school supplies for students at Robert L. Taylor Elementary School, 144 Westminster Way in Henderson, and Sunrise Acres Elementary School, 211 28th St., through Wednesday .

Among supplies needed are: backpacks, paper, crayons, markers, scissors, glue sticks, tissue, binders, colored pencils, rulers, paper towels, hand sanitizer and zip-close bags.

Items can be dropped off between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. at 4141 Swenson St. near East Flamingo Road and 3150 N. Tenaya Way at the corner of Cheyenne Avenue in the MountainView Medical Offices building. The donations will be delivered to the schools before the first day of classes Monday .

As part of its 50/50 School Supply Drive, a $50 discount will be applied toward a 50-minute spa treatment for guests who donate new school supplies worth $10 or more. All collected supplies will be donated to the Red Rock's partner school, Diskin Elementary School, 4220 S. Ravenwood Drive.

Guests are asked to mention the 50/50 offer when making an appointment and bring a receipt with the school item(s). A same-day $50 credit will be issued for any 50-minute service.

Eligible treatments include a Swedish massage, a classic facial and an island glow body scrub, ranging from $90 to $115 with the discount. There is a limit of one discount per person per day.
