SUMMER SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE FOR LOW-INCOME STUDENTS

Students from low-income families can apply for scholarships to attend summer school. The Clark County School District and the city of Las Vegas are offering 250 scholarships, funded by a grant from Workforce Connections.

Classes for high school students include physical education, health, U.S. government, English and driver education. Classes for middle school students include English, math, Nevada history, reading, science and world geography. Classes are usually $100 per half-credit.

UNION TEACHERS HAVE TWO-WEEK WINDOW TO WITHDRAW MEMBERSHIP

Clark County School District teachers in the Clark County Education Association wishing to opt out of union membership for the 2012-13 school year must notify the CCEA in writing between Sunday and July 15. UNLV STUDENTS WIN MEDIA PLAN COMPETITION

Maria Jose Flor Agreda and Jami Vallesteros, recent graduates from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, won the National Excellence in Media Award and $3,000 each in scholarships at the Washington Media Scholars Foundation Case Competition this month in Washington, D.C.

Students in the competition had four weeks to create a strategic media plan based on a hypothetical special election referendum issue. They had $2.5 million, hypothetically, to spend on getting the ballot referendum passed.

HISPANIC COLLEGE STUDENTS TO RECEIVE $40,000 IN SCHOLARSHIPS

Local college students will receive more than $40,000 in scholarships at the 2012 Southern Nevada Hispanic Employment Program Scholarship Ceremony scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the College of Southern Nevada's Cheyenne campus, 3200 E. Cheyenne Ave.

SNHEP, CSN, Nevada State College and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas are sponsoring the event. SNHEP is a nonprofit organization that promotes education among Latinos.

MADAME TUSSAUDS OFFERS FREE ADMISSION FOR STRAIGHT-A STUDENTS

Clark County School District students with straight A's on their spring report cards can receive free admission through August to Madame Tussauds, a wax museum at The Venetian, 3377 Las Vegas Blvd. South, No. 2001. Students must present their report card at the box office to receive a ticket.

HOPELINK OF SOUTHERN NEVADA TO DONATE CLOTHING, BACKPACKS TO KIDS IN NEED

HopeLink of Southern Nevada is hosting its 11th annual Back2School drive through Saturday to collect clothing for at least 1,100 children returning to school in the fall who have registered for the assistance program.

Individuals and companies are asked to sponsor a child by making a $100 donation or shopping for a complete outfit, including shoes and undergarments. Each child will also receive a new backpack filled with school supplies donated by members of Central Christian Church.

Children will receive their outfits and backpacks at a special event planned for August.

MERRYHILL SCHOOL STUDENTS' ENVIRONMENTAL PLEDGE WINS AWARD

Third-graders at the Merryhill School, 5055 S. Durango Drive, won the state division of the 2012 Disney Planet Challenge, an environmental and science competition for elementary and middle schools. Students created an energy conservation plan and distributed a conserving power pledge to Merryhill parents, teachers and local businesses. The students received support from 64 businesses, including 10 casinos.

UNIVERSITY OF PHOENIX OFFERS SCHOLARSHIPS TO ACTIVE, RETIRED MILITARY

The University of Phoenix, 7455 W. Washington Ave., and American Veterans, or AMVETS, a veterans education advocacy group, will award 50 scholarships worth $7,000 each to active-duty service members, veterans and eligible family members to pursue a degree from the University of Phoenix. Applications for the 2012 University of Phoenix AMVETS Scholarship are being accepted through Aug. 21.

SCHOOL DISTRICT OFFERS ONLINE SUMMER LEARNING ACTIVITIES

The Clark County School District is offering online resources to help students continue learning during the summer break. The Fun Summer Learning Activities are available to families with students enrolled in kindergarten through 12th grade. The materials provide grade-appropriate activities in math, reading and more.

KIDS CAN LEARN GARDENING AT WEEKLY CLASSES AT COOPERATIVE EXTENSION

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension is offering an eight-week Junior Master Gardener program for children 7 to 12. They will experience hands-on gardening activities and learn about plants, soil, vegetables and more.

Classes are scheduled from 8 to 11 a.m. Wednesdays at the Lifelong Learning Center, 8050 Paradise Road, and Saturdays at the Master Gardener Orchard, 4600 Horse Drive in North Las Vegas, through July.

STUDENTS RECEIVE DISCOUNTS TO EDUCATIONAL EXHIBITS

Students will receive a 30 percent discount throughout summer to "BODIES ... The Exhibition" and "Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition," both at the Luxor, 3900 Las Vegas Blvd. South. Tickets are available at the box office on the atrium level of the casino. Regularly priced tickets are $24 for children, $32 for adults and $30 for seniors.

FREE RESUME PRINTING OFFERED FOR NEW COLLEGE GRADUATES

Cartridge World, 3655 S. Rainbow Blvd., is offering free resume printing for recent college graduates. Cartridge World, an ink and toner refilling retailer, will print 15 to 25 copies of a single-color resume with a two-page maximum. Resumes should be brought to the store on a USB drive with proof of graduation within the past month.
