STATON ELEMENTARY OFFERS EXTENDED KINDERGARTEN

Staton Elementary School, 1700 Sageberry Drive, plans to offer tuition-based, extended-day kindergarten for the 2013-14 school year. Registration is scheduled from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. today in the school office and will continue during regular school hours until the full- and half-day programs reach capacity.

NEVADA PREPAID TUITION PROGRAM DEADLINE APPROACHING

The deadline to apply for the Nevada Prepaid Tuition Program is Feb. 28. The program allows parents to lock in future state college and four-year university tuition rates at current prices. Monthly payments can be made over a five-year period or longer. Students in ninth grade or younger –– including newborns –– are eligible.

Since 1998, more than 13,000 Nevada students have enrolled. For more information, visit nvprepaid.gov.

NV ENERGY SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE TO HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS

High school seniors in Clark County can apply for $1,000 scholarships sponsored by NV Energy through March 1. The Powerful Partnerships Scholarship Program is supported by The Public Education Foundation. The number of scholarships will be determined by eligibility and the number of applications received.

Since the program’s inception in 2000, NV Energy has awarded nearly 600 scholarships, including 95 in 2012. The one-time scholarships can be used at any accredited college, university or trade school. Recipients will be invited to an award ceremony in May.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO ADVOCATE FOR DISABLED STUDENTS

The Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada, 800 S. Eighth St., is seeking volunteers for its Educational Surrogate Parent Program.

Volunteers advocate for foster children with disabilities in the Clark County School District to ensure that students’ special education needs are being met. Volunteers may need to write letters, make phone calls and attend school-related meetings on behalf of the student.

An orientation and training session is scheduled from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the Pueblo Room at the Clark County Government Center, 500 S. Grand Central Parkway.

No experience is necessary to volunteer. Last school year, 80 volunteers helped more than 130 students. Volunteers can expect a time commitment of about 25 hours per school year.

COMEDY MAGICIAN MAC KING TO HOST BOOK DRIVE THROUGH FEBRUARY

Comedy magician Mac King plans to host a book drive in February to support The Public Education Foundation’s Clark County READS program.

Sky Zone Indoor Trampoline Park, 4915 Steptoe St., plans to collect books through Feb. 28. Those who donate three or more new or gently used books will receive a pair of tickets to the Mac King Comedy Show and a free one-hour jump pass to Sky Zone. There is a limit of one pair of tickets per person and one jump pass, which must be used the same day.

Starting Feb. 27 during Nevada Reading Week, which is scheduled from Monday through March 1, King plans to visit three local elementary schools to perform tricks and read short stories. Each student at those schools will receive a book.

CLARK HIGH SCHOOL TO HOST OPEN FORUMS FOR PARENTS

Clark High School, 4291 W. Pennwood Ave., plans to host a series of open forums for parents starting at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. Future scheduled dates are March 20, April 17 and May 15. The forums will give parents a chance to discuss concerns with principal Jill Pendleton and other staff members.

COLLEGE OF SOUTHERN NEVADA TO HOST CAREER FAIR MARCH 6

The College of Southern Nevada, 3200 E. Cheyenne Ave., plans to host a career fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 6 at the June Whitley Student Lounge. The event is open to the public.

HOSPITAL DISPLAYS STUDENT ARTWORK

The St. Rose Dominican Hospitals Siena Campus, 3001 St. Rose Parkway, has a children’s art gallery in the third-floor lobby that features student art from Brown Junior High School, 307 N. Cannes St. The gallery, Impressions at Siena, is open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and admission is free.

The gallery features 32 pieces of art made by Brown students using charcoal, oil and pastels. They are scheduled to be on display through April 25. The hospital plans to rotate student exhibits among schools.

STUDENTS TO PERFORM april 14 WITH HENDERSON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Several Clark County School District students are scheduled to perform with the Henderson Symphony Orchestra in the Young Artists Concert at 2 p.m. April 14 at the Henderson Pavilion, 200 S. Green Valley Parkway. Admission to the concert is free.

Students from across the valley auditioned for the concert, which is in its 18th year.

KOHL’S ACCEPTING NOMINATIONS FOR SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The Kohl’s Department Stores’ Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program is accepting nominations for children 6 to 18 until March 15 at kohlskids.com.

The program plans to award more than $425,000 in scholarships and prizes in 2013 ranging from $50 gift cards to $10,000 scholarships to more than 2,300 young volunteers who have made a positive impact in their communities. The nominators must be 21 or older.

Two nominees from each of the more than 1,100 Kohl’s stores nationwide will win a $50 Kohl’s gift card, and more than 200 will win regional scholarships worth $1,000 toward post-secondary education. Ten national winners will be awarded a total of $10,000 in scholarships for post-secondary education, and Kohl’s will donate $1,000 to a nonprofit organization on each national winner’s behalf.

Since the program began in 2001, Kohl’s has recognized more than 17,000 kids with more than $3.4 million in scholarships and prizes.

VEGAS PBS LAUNCHES EARTH DAY ART CONTEST FOR STUDENTS

The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada is accepting submissions through March 14 for its Earth Day Art Contest.

Students in sixth through 12th grade can submit artwork that promotes the transportation commission’s sustainable initiative –– “quicker, cleaner, greener” –– with images of transit, carpooling, biking and walking. The top two entries will be featured on a transportation commission vehicle for up to a year.

Entries should have a message related to Earth Day and sustainable transportation; be in horizontal format on 11-inch-by-17-inch paper; be colorful and drawn with colored pencils, markers or paint; and be original in concept.

Submissions should be sent to the Regional Transportation Commission, attention: Aileen Pastor, at 600 S. Grand Central Parkway, Suite 350, Las Vegas, NV 89106. Artwork may be rolled up but not folded.

STUDENTS TO SHOWCASE DESIGNS AT MARCH FASHION SHOW

The Junior League of Las Vegas has scheduled a fashion show for 2 p.m. March 9 at the Fashion Show mall, 3200 Las Vegas Blvd. South, as part of the fifth annual Fashion Forward Challenge. All costumes will be original designs made by Clark County students, who will compete for prizes. Costumes will be based on the theme “Into the Forest.” Students received donated materials and gift cards to make their costumes.

Participating schools are Centennial High School, 10200 W. Centennial Parkway; Las Vegas High School, 6500 E. Sahara Ave.; Southwest Career and Technical Academy, 7050 W. LAS VEGAS ACADEMY ALUMNI CELEBRATION SCHEDULED FOR MARCH 29 AND 30

The Las Vegas Academy Alumni Association’s 20th anniversary celebration is scheduled for March 29 and 30. It is set to feature a talent show, a silent auction fundraiser and a picnic.
