Foundation to salute four for contributions to public education

Four community members will be honored today at the Public Education Foundation's 16th annual Education Hero Award dinner at CityCenter's Mandarin Oriental hotel.

Mark Fine, CEO of Mark L. Fine & Associates, is the recipient of the Education Hero Award for his contributions to the community and education, having co-founded Clark County School District's School-Community Partnership Program. The program pairs schools with businesses and individuals who donate to the school, volunteer and offer other supports. "He is truly deserving of this honor," said Judi Steele, president of the foundation.

Charles and Phyllis Frias are the recipients of the Lifetime Education Achievement Award. The couple arrived in Las Vegas in 1958, built Frias Transportation Management and have been "quiet philanthropists who staunchly supported education," according to the foundation. The award is posthumous for Charles Frias, who died in 2006.

The Champion of Children Award, for supporters of children's issues, goes to Annemarie Jones. She served on several nonprofits, including the foundation board and the board of trustees for Lied Discovery Children's Museum. All proceeds support foundation programs to improve education in Southern Nevada.

The foundation is a nonprofit established in 1991 to support public education reform and provide private funding for new educational practices, grants and scholarships in Southern Nevada public schools.
