Four apply for vacant Clark County School Board seat
Four applicants have come forward to temporarily fill a Clark County School Board seat, which already has seen two representatives come and go within the four-year term.
The applicants are Rene Cantu Jr., executive director of the Latin Chamber of Commerce's Community Foundation; Kenneth Rezendes, owner of A-Dependable Insurance Agency in northwest Las Vegas; Georgeann Ray, a substitute teacher who's been active in the district for 19 years on committees and parent groups; and Jose Solorio, who served on the School Board in 1993-94 as a replacement and ran for the State Board of Education in 2010.
The School Board will interview the applicants at 2 p.m. Thursday at 5100 W. Sahara Ave., the district's administrative center. The interviews are open to the public.
The applicant selected will represent northwest Las Vegas through December, when the four-year term ends and a voter-chosen board member begins a new term.
Keeping a board member in the seat has proven tricky this term.
Elected board member Terri Janison resigned in November 2010 to become Gov. Brian Sandoval's director of community relations. She had been on the board since 2005. Current applicant Solorio also applied for the position at that time, but the School Board appointed businessman John Cole in January 2011 to replace Janison. Cole filed for election last spring to keep the position through 2016, but pulled out of the race as the June 21 primary neared and then resigned. He has since moved to Denver for work.
Cole's replacement will have a short term, but board members unanimously voted June 21 that northwest Las Vegas needs representation for the rest of 2012.
