Las Vegas school social worker arrested on sexual misconduct charges

Updated March 4, 2019 - 3:54 pm

Clark County School District police have arrested a social worker for alleged inappropriate behavior with two students following an investigation at Chaparral High School.

Anthony Winston, 31, faces charges of kidnapping a minor, child abuse, two counts of open and gross lewdness and two counts of attempt to engage in sexual conduct with a student 16 years or older, according to Justice Court records

He was a contract employee for CCSD, working as a safe school professional, according to the district — a role similar to that of a social worker. He was in the process of becoming a licensed school social worker, the district said.

A fact sheet on the “safe school professional” position on the University of Nevada, Reno, website, describes the role as supporting “the development of a safe and respectful positive school climate according to the needs of the school and in order to address a variety of potential barriers to academic success that may exist within the child, home, school, or community.”

Winston is the fifth worker at the district arrested by police this year — three of whom have been accused of inappropriate sexual behavior with minors, according to Review-Journal records.

Winston, who was booked in the Clark County Detention Center on Friday, was contracted in October 2018 and had his employment terminated on Feb. 28.

He was contracted through Progressus Therapy, part of the Invo HealthCare Family of Companies. The district paid over $1 million to Progressus in fiscal year 2017 for providing occupational and physical therapy to students.
