Many summer camps already open for registration

Summer camps can help keep kids active, entertained and safe during the summer break, and options are available around the Las Vegas Valley.

BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF HENDERSON PLANS CAMP AT ALEXANDER DAWSON SCHOOL

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Henderson plan to host a summer camp from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 25 to Aug. 10 at the Alexander Dawson School, 10845 W. Desert Inn Road in Summerlin.

The summer program will feature seven weeks of Olympic-themed activities, with each week having a new "location" such as Athens, Rio de Janeiro and Beijing. The camp is $195 per week and includes lunch. For more information and to register, visit bgchevents.org/dawson.

Ken Rubeli, CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Henderson, said he wanted to create the "best summer camp value experience in Summerlin."

"At Dawson ... we'll have full access to their premier programming areas," Rubeli said. "We'll be able to do a much broader program."

Rubeli said there will be "an over-the-top special event" every Friday. A 150-foot homemade "Slip 'n Slide" will be one of them, he said.

Rubeli said the kids will learn about the different countries during the week and have visits from guest entertainers and presenters. Speaking from his own experience, Rubeli said parents will appreciate the full-day aspect of the camp.

"For the type of activities, for 50 hours a week, we're the best value out there," Rubeli said. "When I look back on memories of my childhood, most of the exciting things I remember happened at summer camp at the Boys and Girls Club."

Other Boys & Girls Clubs of Henderson locations plan to offer camps, too. A $20 annual membership fee is required at all clubs. The Kish, Marker, Boyd and Montandon clubs plan to offer free camps. Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas' summer camps are scheduled from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. for kids 5 to 18. Camp participants must be members of the club. Registration is $20 for children 5 to 12 and $10 for children 13 to 18.

Kids at the camps will be grouped by ages and rotate hourly to different activities. Lunch will be provided at some clubs.

Camps are free for teens. For children 5 to 12, camps are free after noon and $15 per day if the child arrives in the morning.

HENDERSON INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL TO HOST OPEN HOUSE FOR CAMP

The Henderson International School, 1165 Sandy Ridge Ave., has an open house scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 6 to promote its Summit Ridge Day Camp, which is planned from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday from June 11 to Aug. 3. Early and late care is available.

The camp is $225 per week, and children 4 to 12 may attend. The camp's executive director, Lisa Bienstock, said it would be a throwback to the way camps used to be.

"We are pretty much the only traditional day camp in the Las Vegas area," said Bienstock, who is a mother of three young boys. "We program it here where it's every activity under the sun. There's swimming every day. We have gymnastics, sports, an inflatable rock wall."

And without fail, Bienstock said, every child will get a Popsicle at the end of the day.

CITY OF HENDERSON PLANS CAMPS

City of Henderson's summer camps are scheduled from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday from June 11 to Aug. 24.

Kids Zone is offered for children 5 to 12, and Teen Kamp is for children 12 to 15. Camps are $99 to $110 per week.

CLARK COUNTY HAS VARIETY OF CAMP OPTIONS

Clark County has summer day camps scheduled at its community and recreation centers for children 6 to 12. The camps are scheduled from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday from June 11 to Aug. 24.

Activities are set to include arts and crafts, sports, games, field trips, theater skits and plays, and science projects. Participants are required to bring a lunch and two snacks.

The camps are $15 per day or $70 per week, per child. Participating centers include:

GIRL SCOUTS TO HOST CAMP FOXTAIL

Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada's Camp Foxtail is scheduled from June 17 to Aug. 12 for girls 5 to 17 who are registered members of Girl Scouts. Prices range from $50 to $295.

Camp Foxtail is in the Toiyabe National Forest in the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area and offers sessions that focus on the environment, financial literacy, entrepreneurship, health, science, technology, engineering and math.

The 2012 Leadership Camp, hosted by Issues Concerning Adolescents of Nevada, for children and teens 11 to 17, is scheduled for July 8-14 at Camp Lee Canyon. CAMP SUNSHINE OFFERS ACTIVITIES FOR CHILDREN WITH LIFE-THREATENING ILLNESSES
