National Merit semifinalist: David “DJ” Helmick | Coronado High School

David "DJ" Helmick

Coronado High School

■ What college do you plan on attending and for what major?

I plan on attending the University of Alabama for either computer science or a liberal arts degree (perhaps both!). I haven't quite decided what side of my brain I'd like to use. Computer science interests me because I've grown up around computers and I like programming. As far as the liberal arts go, English has always been my favorite subject in school and I love to read and write, but I could be doing that on the side as a hobby while majoring in computer science. It's a tough decision.

■ What extracurricular activities do you participate in?

I currently participate in my school's Leo Club. The club runs Coronado's recycling program, and we constantly are doing volunteer work ranging from making food for (homeless) shelters to helping out at local races and events.

■ What do you do for fun?

I read a lot of books, go thrifting (shopping), run, and write short stories.

■ In detail, how did you prepare for the PSAT?

I prepared for it in the same way as if I were taking the actual SAT for the first time. I read over the College Board website, looked at some practice tests, and just tried to stay relaxed about the whole matter so I wouldn't blank out the day of the test.

■ Why are grades so important to you?

Grades are important to me because my parents expect the best out of me, and I don't want to let them down. Plus, I get free pizza at the Straight-A Luncheon.

■ What's your favorite movie and book?

My favorite movie is Monty Python's "The Meaning of Life," and my favorite book is "Good Omens" by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett.

■ What's a guilty pleasure of yours - such as a TV show, movie or hobby - and why are you ashamed of liking it?

I love the British sci-fi television show, "Doctor Who." It's been on since the 1960s. While I am certainly not ashamed of liking it, my friends think it's a bit weird, which is ridiculous. It's amazing!

I'd also like to add that I am a proud member of the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) community.
