Nine honored for excellence, distinction

With more than 40 percent of Clark County's 308,000 public school students being Latino, the group outnumbers all other individual ethnicities in the fifth-largest school district in the United States.

And some of those children need support, which is why the Latin Chamber of Commerce honored a short list of community members Friday night for supporting the educational growth of young Latinos in the Las Vegas community.

The event, the Señoras of Excellence and Señores of Distinction, was the eighth of its kind, held at Caesars Palace to benefit the chamber's Community Foundation Scholarship Fund.

"We have awarded in excess of 170 scholarships to well-deserved students," event coordinator Sandy Colón Peltyn said.

The year's Señoras of Excellence are Heather Allen of the Comprehensive Cancer Centers of Nevada; Sherri Allen, chief operating officer of HealthCare Partners of Nevada; Lynette Chappell, first lady of Siegfried & Roy Productions; and Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto.

The Señores of Distinction are Las Vegas Review-Journal Publisher Bob Brown; Fred Keeton, vice president of finance and external affairs for Caesars Entertainment Inc.; and Luis Valera of Back to Health Chiropractic and co-founder of Latin American Medical Association.

The event also held a "salute to a legend" for Jerry Tarkanian, basketball coach for the UNLV Running' Rebels from 1973 to 1992.

IND Insurance Exchange, represented by president and CEO James Hooban was honored as the corporation of distinction.

Steve Schorr, vice president of public and government affairs for Cox Communications, received the Lifetime Achievement Award.
