School Board to issue $34 million in bonds for school buses, computer
The Clark County School District is taking on $34 million in new debt to buy 172 buses and about 14,000 computers.
The School Board unanimously decided Thursday to issue $34 million in bonds and will pay the money back over 10 years with an estimated annual interest rate of 5 percent.
While 107 of the new school buses will replace worn-out buses past 14 years old, 51 buses will be used to increase the district’s fleet of short buses that transport a growing population of special education students. Special education students are assigned bus stops as near as possible to their homes.
Another 14 new school buses will be for student sports and activities.
The remaining $10 million will be spent replacing computers past their five-year life spans, said Jhone Ebert, the district’s chief technologies officer.
Computer prices vary but average $700 a piece.
