Six students get college scholarships from Silver State Schools Credit Union

Silver State Schools Credit Union has handed out its 2013 college scholarships to six seniors in the Clark County School District. Each scholarship awards $2,000 annually, renewable for up to four years, and is awarded to seniors who are credit unions members and who excel in academics, athletics and community service.

Of the six scholarships, four were named for longtime volunteers Arlene Parkinson, Bart Roche, Leonard Petoske and William Moore. The two remaining are SSSCU scholarships.

This year’s winners were:

• Laura Andrea Prito (Arlene Parkinson), will graduate from Las Vegas Academy with a weighted grade-point average of 4.7, intends to pursue a degree in biological studies at either University of Nevada, Reno or Loyola Chicago.

• Wen Jay Tan (Bart Roche) of Coronado High School will graduate with a weighted GPA of 4.77. Tan is looking to pursue a career in computer engineering or software design.

• Sharon Malwane (Leonard Petoske) also of Coronado High School, has a weighted GPA of 4.8. Malwane has been accepted by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and will study biology and medicine.

• Emma Berkowitz (William Moore) from Centennial High school will graduate with a weighted GPA of 4.7. Berkowitz is planning on attending Cal Poly Pomona to pursue a degree in chemical engineering.

• Nicolas Vaughn (SSSCU) from Clark High School achieved an overall weighted GPA of 4.67. Vaughn intends to study neuroscience.

• Andrew Miller (SSSCU) of CSN High School, West Charleston Campus will graduate in June with 48 transferable college credits and a GPA of 4.2. Miller will attend UNR and intends to study biology.
