‘48 Hours’ on CBS to feature Las Vegas murderer

It was a story meant for TV.

A woman kills her ex-husband in front of her 10-year-old son. She is tried for murder but the jury finds that she acted in self-defense. Twenty years later she is on trial again for shooting and paralyzing that same son with the same gun she used to kill her ex-husband.

Linda Cooney’s story played out in Las Vegas courts for more than three years. Her story gets another hearing Saturday in “48 Hours” on CBS in a segment titled “Mommy Dearest.”

Prosecutors said she shot her son Kevin Cooney on June 28, 2011. Kevin Cooney testified in the trial along with his brother, Chris, a Las Vegas police officer. Kevin Cooney maintained that he attacked his mother and shot himself after a struggle with her.

In April, Linda Cooney was convicted of attempted murder, battery with a deadly weapon and intimidating a witness. In July she was sentenced to 13 to 41 years in prison.

The show airs at 10 p.m. on KLAS-TV, Channel 8.
