Car in crash that killed driver was stolen, Las Vegas police say

An 18-year-old man died and a 16-year-old boy was in critical condition after crashing a stolen car Monday morning at Lake Mead Boulevard and Tonopah Drive, Las Vegas police said Tuesday.

The identity of the deceased man has not been not released.

Police said at 9:39 a.m., the 18-year-old driver of the 1997 Saturn was traveling east on Lake Mead, west of Tonopah, when he lost control and began sliding sideways. The Saturn struck a curb and then a traffic signal control box after coming to rest on the 2000 block of West Lake Mead.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The 16-year-old passenger sustained life-threatening injuries. He was being treated at University Medical Center. His condition was unknown Tuesday.

The incident marked the 34th traffic fatality under the jurisdiction of Las Vegas police in 2012.
