Central Las Vegas fire displaces 2 adults, 2 dogs, 1 cat
Strong winds contributed to the damage a house fire caused Sunday morning in the central Las Vegas Valley.
Neighbors said they heard an explosion and then saw the house on the 3700 block of El Jardin Avenue, near West Oakey and South Valley View Boulevard, in flames. The call came in at 11:20 a.m., according to Las Vegas Fire Department spokesman Tim Szymanski.
The wind pushed the flames up against a neighboring house.
One home was badly damaged, Szymanski said, and the second suffered moderate damage. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Two dogs and a cat were treated for smoke inhalation.
Red Cross will be assisting the two adults and pets displaced.
Szymanski said the department received a flurry of 911 calls and a team of about 75 firefighters had the fire under control in about 20 minutes.
Authorities wanted to remind people that on windy days one of the leading causes of fire is smoking related, Szymanski said, adding that firefighters had not determined the cause of the house fire and remains under investigation.
“If you smoke outside and you’re done smoking, take your smoking material inside, wet it in the sink and then discard it,” he said.
