Cold front brings high winds, dust advisory to Las Vegas

A cold front that moved across the Las Vegas Valley on Tuesday night brought wind gusts of up to 40 mph and led to a dust advisory that will be in effect until late Thursday afternoon, meteorologists and health department officials said.

Winds are expected to pick up about 11 p.m. Wednesday, causing more dust, said Phillip Wiker, an air quality meteorologist with the Clark County Department of Air Quality.

The cold front, which formed in the Gulf of Alaska, brought temperatures back to normal after a recent heat wave here. An overnight low was recorded at 66 degrees, which is normal this time of year, said Larry Jensen, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

People with respiratory problems are urged to stay indoors if possible, and construction workers were also advised to be careful on the job site due to dust and wind, the air quality agency stated.

Boaters on Lake Mead and the Colorado River were warned to take care in the face of possible 50 mph winds. Same goes for motorcyclists and truckers traveling between the Hoover Dam and Lake Havasu.

Temperatures in the 90s are expected to return to the Las Vegas Valley by Saturday, then there’s a chance for another cooling-off period Sunday.

The normal high this time of year is 84 degrees, Jensen said.
