Daughter suddenly ill, Reid returns to DC
WASHINGTON — Sen. Harry Reid’s daughter Lana Reid Barringer has unexpectedly taken ill and will need surgery, the senator’s office said Tuesday.
Reid was in Nevada but returned over the weekend to Washington, where Barringer, who lives in McLean, Va., is receiving treatment. Reid otherwise was scheduled to be in Reno on Tuesday evening for a Nevada Day governor’s banquet
A spokeswoman said Barringer, who is in her early 50s, “unexpectedly became ill with a serious medical condition that requires surgery.”
No further details were given. The Reid family “asks for privacy on this matter at this time,” said the spokeswoman, Kristen Orthman.
Lana is the oldest child of the senator and his wife, Landra, and their only daughter along with four sons. She is married to Steven Barringer, an attorney and lobbyist in Washington, D.C.
In March 2010, Barringer and Landra Reid were involved in an accident on Interstate 95 outside Washington in which the Honda Odyssey in which they were riding was rear-ended by a tractor-trailer in heavy traffic.
Barringer suffered a neck injury and facial cuts and was released from the hospital. Landra Reid was hospitalized in Fairfax, Va., with a broken nose, broken back and broken neck. She was released four days later after undergoing surgery to stabilize the injuries.
