Downtown Las Vegas fire causes road closures

Updated December 31, 2024 - 11:24 pm

A downtown fire caused some road closures on New Year’s Eve.

Maryland Parkway and East Ogden Avenue had been shut down as officials responded to a blaze nearby, according to a post from the Metropolitan Police Department’s X account. Police said the fire broke out around 4:40 p.m. near the intersection of East Fremont and South 11th Streets.

According to Google Maps, the intersection is home to multiple former motels, including the Travelers at 1100 Fremont Street and Lucky Motel at 1111 Fremont Street. The fire appeared to stem from the latter, which has been closed since 2012.

Metro asked the public to avoid the area until about 7:30 p.m. when the roads had reopened. Lieutenant Jeff Stuart told the Review-Journal that it was unclear if anyone had been injured.

The former Lucky Motel was one of several vacant properties owned by Zappos chief Tony Hsieh’s Downtown Project. Hsieh died in November 2020, causing his estate to sell more than $45 million worth of properties he assembled. However, many others remained in the group’s ownership years later. The Review-Journal reported that those in blighted conditions drew a nuisance notice from the city.

Another fire erupted at the site in 2023. Firefighters extinguished the fire, and no one was injured.
