Ryan Popowcer and Joseph Maurer, Liberty High School seniors, appeared on the nationally syndicated talk show, "Katie," on Nov. 7 to present actor Michael J. Fox with a check for $3,500, which they raised through a local fundraiser for Parkinson's disease. They played a "Family Ties"-inspired trivia game with Fox on the show, which is hosted by Katie Couric.

Landon Pomerleau has graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. A 2011 graduate of Shadow Ridge High School, Pomerleau is the son of Jami Pomerleau of Las Vegas.

Nathan Wilson has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. A 2010 graduate of Palo Verde High School, Wilson is the son of Natalie Wilson of Henderson.

Daniel Gershin, a student at Shadow Ridge High School, has been invited to join the U.S. Army All-American Marching Band.

The band will perform at halftime for the nationally broadcast U.S. Army All American Bowl on Jan. 5 at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

Gershin, who plays trumpet, was presented with an honorary jacket in front of family, friends, fellow band members and classmates at his school Oct. 23 to celebrate the invitation.

Miwah Li, a junior at Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C., is studying in Beijing, China, for the fall 2012 semester. Li is the daughter of Milee Li of Las Vegas.

Lakisha Brown has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

A 1996 graduate of Rancho High School, she earned a bachelor's degree in 2006 from Ottawa University in Phoenix.

Brown is the daughter of Linda Watkins of Las Vegas.

Five local students have been named state finalists in the 2012 Wendy's High School Heisman Award Program.

The contest recognizes outstanding high school seniors who excel in athletics, academics and community leadership.

These finalists are now in the running to become state winners, and the next phase will be the national winners:
