TEAM ELEMENTS TO HOST
FUNDRAISING DINNER THURSDAY

As part of this year's Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Light the Night Walk, Team Elements plans to host a fundraising dinner from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at four CiCi's Pizza locations.

The restaurants will donate a portion of every receipt that is put into the bucket by the register. After 6 p.m., team members will be at the 6475 N. Decatur Blvd. location.

Last year, the 13-member team raised more than $25,000. The team will be walking in support of Tim Provo, who died of leukemia last year.

The team also has scheduled a blood donation drive from 4 to 8 p.m. Sept. 28, at Elements Exhibits, 3917 Lone Mountain Road.

CAPTURE DOWNTOWN! PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION VOTING TO BEGIN THURSDAY

Select your favorite photos online in the Capture Downtown! competition, due to be hosted at lvrj.com from Thursday through Sept. 22.

Winners in the competition, sponsored by the city of Las Vegas, the Downtown Las Vegas Alliance, Symphony Park and the Las Vegas Review-Journal, are set to be announced in October during the Symphony Park Lecture at the Historic Fifth Street School, 401 S. Fourth St.

SALON TO OFFER $5 HAIRCUTS FOR MILITARY PERSONNEL AND THEIR FAMILIES

CLASS TO FOCUS ON COMPOSTING
IN SMALL SPACES

Join the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, 8050 Paradise Road, from 8 a.m. to noon Sept. 10 for a workshop on how to make a balanced compost in small spaces.

The workshop, taught by Angela O'Callaghan, is designed to provide the gardener with knowledge on vermicomposting and more. Homeowners and other interested parties are welcome to attend.

Class space is limited to 25 people, and pre-registration is required. There is a $20 fee per class.

UNICO SCHEDULED TO HOST
BRUNCH AND SILENT AUCTION

The Las Vegas chapter of Unico, an Italian service organization, is scheduled to host a brunch, silent auction and raffle from 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 18 at the Italian American Club, 2333 E. Sahara Ave. The cost is $20 per person.

All proceeds will benefit John F. Miller School, 1905 Atlantic St., and Italian music scholarships. The Joe Darrow Trio, featuring Allen Tramont, is scheduled to perform live.

MAIN STREET STATION RESTROOM
AMONG BEST NATIONWIDE

Main Street Station, 200 N. Main St., is a top 10 finalist for the 2011 America's Best Restroom Contest, presented by Cintas Corp. Voting is open to the public through Sept. 19. The nominated restroom is described as "a graffiti-covered segment of the oppressive wall that once separated East and West Berlin (that) now serves as an appropriate function in the gentlemen's restroom in the main casino area, as it holds the urinals."

Las Vegas has made it to the finals before, but no bathroom from Nevada has won the top honor.

H2U FALL FESTIVAL TO OFFER FREE
HEALTH SCREENINGS, INFORMATION

Seniors can mark their calendars for the h2u fall festival, planned for 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sept. 17 in the Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center auditorium, 3186 S. Maryland Parkway.

The free event will include complimentary health screenings and information on how to join the h2u supplemental health program.

NV ENERGY SENIOR EXPO HELPS LOCALS RECEIVE ENERGY ASSISTANCE

More than $317,000 in energy assistance was distributed to 1,053 qualifying seniors through Project REACH as NV Energy held its fifth annual Senior Energy Assistance Aug. 13 at Cashman Center, 850 Las Vegas Blvd. North.

About 3,000 local seniors attended the event, which provided a place for seniors to apply for energy assistance, get answers to conservation questions and learn more about other nonprofit and utility programs.

More than 170 volunteers gave 1,317 hours to put on the event.
