The Silver State chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Boulder City recently named Joan Kerschner-Tinker the recipient of its annual Community Service Award.

Kerschner-Tinker was selected by the chapter for her achievements in bringing culture and history to the residents of Nevada through her work at the Nevada State Library and Archives and at the Department of Cultural Affairs.

She began her career at the Nevada State Library and Archives in 1973. Kerschner-Tinker was appointed Nevada State Librarian in 1986, and in 1993 was appointed director of the Department of Cultural Affairs. She currently is active as a volunteer and on the boards of Tonopah’s Historic Mining Park and the Clark County Museum.

Chapter member Luanna Mitchell said in a press release, “We at DAR believe she is a true example of what volunteerism means, and the Silver State Chapter is very proud to give her this award.”

Firefighters and a resident were honored March 29 by the Clark County Fire Department and county commissioners at an awards ceremony at Fire Station 33.

Local resident Tim Garcia received the Citizen Lifesaving Award for administering CPR to a co-worker until firefighters arrived. The co-worker survived.

Station 12, led by Capt. Paul Youdelis, and Station 15, led by Capt. Steven Broadwell, received the Distinguished Service Award for their actions in saving a woman trapped in a burning building.

The Lifesaving Award went to firefighters Steve De Pue, Matt Houchens and Capt. John Borla. Off-duty firefighter De Pue, who heard a neighbor’s smoke detector, extinguished a kitchen fire and helped the neighbor exit the house safely. Houchens and Borla, who were working out at a private gym while off-duty, used a defibrillator and CPR to save a person who also was at the gym.

The Nevada Recreation and Park Society recently awarded Dirk Richwine with the NRPS Citation Award at its annual Program Excellence Awards.

Richwine, the recreation superintendent for the city of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department, received the award for his contributions in the field of public parks and recreation on the local, state, regional and national levels.

Angela Daffron of Henderson and Kelsey Kinsel of Las Vegas finished as semifinalists in the 2011 Energizer Keep Going Hall of Fame search. Both were selected for their dedication to making a positive impact in the community.

Daffron launched Jodi’s Voice, an organization designed to raise awareness of the crime of stalking and provide services for victims. Kinsel started the organization Salvation City to raise awareness for suicide prevention.

The Energizer Keep Going Hall of Fame program honors people for their energy and work toward making a difference.

Jewish War Veterans of the U.S.A. Sgt. Manny Peven Post 65 recently elected the following new officers: George Barnett, commander; Bob Roth, senior vice commander; Sherman Goldsmith, junior vice commander; and Bernie Spindel, judge advocate.

Hash House A Go Go chef Anthony Vidal won the inaugural Silver Plate Celebrity Chef Contest at a fundraising event for the Family Resource Center at University Medical Center. The event took place at Silver Ridge Healthcare Center March 29.
