GREAT SANTA RUN TO STEP OFF SATURDAY
AT TOWN SQUARE LAS VEGAS

Opportunity Village plans to host its annual Las Vegas Great Santa Run at 10 a.m. Saturday at Town Square Las Vegas, 6605 Las Vegas Blvd. South.

Nonprofit organizations can benefit by creating their own fundraising pages through Opportunity Village's website with a $15 discount on registration.

Individuals interested in suiting up in their Santa Claus costumes and running the 5K race can register for $35 or $25 for children 12 or younger. Registration prices increase to $45 and $35, respectively, on race day.

miracle mile shops' FOUNTAIN TURNS RED FOR AIDS AWARENESS MONTH

Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood Resort, 3667 Las Vegas Blvd. South, plans to turn its fountain red in December for AIDS Awareness Month.

All coins tossed in the fountain will benefit the HIV/AIDS nonprofit organization Golden Rainbow.

Residents interested in the city of Las Vegas' second annual Citizens Academy of Planning can sign up through Dec. 15.

The free, 10-week education program, which is set to begin Jan. 25, 2012, provides attendees with workshops on planning, historic preservation and the permit process.

RESEARCH ON NATIVE AMERICAN RESERVATIONS EARNS AWARD

Educators Staci Emm and Loretta Singeltary from the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, 8050 Paradise Road, won the 2011 National Extension Diversity Award Nov. 13 in San Francisco.

The women's work, "People of the Land," focuses on the historical, social and economic attributes of Native American reservations in Idaho, Nevada, Oregon and Washington.

The three-year work previously won a gold medal from the Association of Natural Resource Extension Professionals and received the top honor in the National Association of County Agricultural Agents' Communications Awards Program.

HELPERS SOUGHT FOR UNITED WAY
TAX ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

The United Way of Southern Nevada, 8290 Arville St., is seeking more than 400 volunteers for its Earn It, Keep It, Save It event scheduled from Jan. 15 to April 17, 2012.

Volunteers are needed as greeters, tax preparers, quality reviewers and site coordinators.

Tax law, e-file training and IRS certification will be provided in several locations throughout the valley for volunteers.

Those donating their time will be able to provide assistance in tax preparation to low- to moderate-income families, seniors and individuals.

LEARN TO SELL LOCAL PRODUCE AND MEAT PRODUCTS DURING WORKSHOPS

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, 8050 Paradise Road, plans to launch a Beginning Farmers & Ranchers program in 2012 with workshops on field crops, processing and selling locally grown meat products and becoming a produce farmer.

The program is scheduled to run from March to September 2012.

Each workshop is two days long and costs $50, which includes two lunches and snacks.
