MEDICARE COUNSELING TO BE OFFERED
Dec. 21 AT SUNRISE HOSPITAL

Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center plans to offer one-on-one Medicare counseling from 10 a.m. to noon Dec. 21 at its H2U office at 3061 S. Maryland Parkway, Suite 102.

Counseling is by appointment only every 20 minutes.

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension plans to host an informational and registration session for its spring 2012 Master Gardener training workshop.

The session is set for 8:30 a.m. Friday at the Lifelong Learning Center, 8050 Paradise Road. Requirements for the workshop, set to begin March 12, and community projects will be discussed.

Paradise PET HOSPITAL SEEKS
DONATIONS OF SUPPLIES

The Paradise Pet Hospital, 1060 E. Flamingo Road, is accepting donations for Noah's Animal House throughout December.

The shelter is in need of supplies, including paper towels, cat litter, canned dog and cat food, 13-gallon trash bags, pet toys, gift cards to pet stores and more.

Donations will be accepted from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Zappos execs set to speak

Zappos.com chief executive officer Tony Hsieh and fellow Zappos.com executive Fred Mossler are scheduled to speak about Zappos' happiness-driven business philosophy from 9 to 11 a.m. today in Building I, Room 108, at the College of Southern Nevada's Charleston campus, 6375 W. Charleston Blvd. The presentation will focus on how Zappos.com became one of the country's leading online retailers by incorporating happiness into its business model. The event is free and open to the public.

AREA ORGANIZATIONS RECEIVE GRANTS

The CarMax Foundation awarded $12,500 in grants to Las Vegas organizations to help local youths as part of the foundation's Regional Giving Program.

Valley grant recipients include Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Nevada, $5,000; Street Teens, $5,000; and Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada, $2,500 for Troop 83's Light Up the Night program, which is aimed at battling cancer.

More than $2.9 million has been donated to local nonprofit organizations across the United States through the program since it started in 2007.

OPEN A BUSINESS in las vegas

People interested in opening a business in the city of Las Vegas can do so by visiting the city's website, lasvegasnevada.gov.

The city of Las Vegas is the first government agency in Southern Nevada to offer customers the ability to apply for a business license online.

Customers also can pay their application fee or renew their current business license online.

The new features are part of the city's priority to make it easier to do business with the city of Las Vegas.

WALMART SHARES THE WEALTH

Walmart has given $100,000 to the Shade Tree shelter as part of its Associate Choice Award. The Walmart Foundation funds initiatives focused on education, workforce development, economic opportunity, environmental sustainability and health and wellness.

From Feb. 1, 2009, through Jan. 31, 2010, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation gave more than $512 million in cash and in-kind gifts globally, $467 million of which was donated in the U.S.
