LEARN TO SELL LOCAL PRODUCE AND MEAT PRODUCTS DURING WORKSHOPS

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, 8050 Paradise Road, plans to launch a Beginning Farmers & Ranchers program in 2012 with workshops on field crops, processing and selling locally grown meat products and becoming a produce farmer.

The program is scheduled to run from March to September 2012. Each workshop is two days long and costs $50, which includes two lunches and snacks.

HELPERS SOUGHT FOR UNITED WAY
TAX ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

The United Way of Southern Nevada, 8290 Arville St., is seeking more than 400 volunteers for its Earn It, Keep It, Save It event scheduled from Jan. 15 to April 17, 2012.

Volunteers are needed as greeters, tax preparers, quality reviewers and site coordinators.

Tax law, e-file training and IRS certification will be provided in several locations throughout the valley for volunteers.

Those donating their time will be able to provide assistance in tax preparation to low- to moderate-income families, seniors and individuals.

CLASS TO ADDRESS DIABETIC DIETARY ISSUES

Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center plans to host a free adult outpatient diabetes class from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Nov. 30 at 3101 S. Maryland Parkway, Suite 100.

Attendees will learn about diabetics' dietary needs and the benefits of diet and exercise. Registration is required.

Catholic Charities in need
of donations for Thanksgiving

Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada is in need of turkeys for Thanksgiving. The social service program is providing turkeys and groceries to families in need.

This holiday season, Catholic Charities expects more than 4,000 families will come seeking Thanksgiving baskets. The organization needs turkeys and traditional Thanksgiving dinner fixings.

Individuals or organizations who would like to help by donating turkeys, canned or nonperishable food can call 385-2662 or deliver donations to Catholic Charities, 1501 Las Vegas Blvd. North.

HELP OPERATION HOMEFRONT
COLLECT GIFTS FOR CHILDREN

Operation Homefront Nevada and Dollar Tree are collecting holiday gifts for military children in Nevada.

The toys will be donated by patrons of the more than 4,000 Dollar Tree and Deal$ stores nationwide.

Last year's effort donated more than 6 million toys nationwide.

Toys will be collected through Dec. 6. Gifts will be distributed to military children during holiday events. In areas where Operation Homefront does not have a chapter, local military support groups will distribute the toys to military families and their children.
