HALLOWEEN FUN PLANNED FOR SENIORS

The Howard Lieburn Senior Center, 6230 Garwood Ave., plans to host a couple of events for Halloween. Seniors can paint a pot to look like a pumpkin for $5 at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. They also can carve, paint and decorate their own pumpkins for $1 at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 26 if registered by Friday. Call 229-1600.

EXHIBITING ROSES, PEST CONTROL
TO BE TOPICS OF TALKS

The South Valley Rose Society and University of Nevada Cooperative Extension are scheduled to host two public meetings at the Lifelong Learning Center, 8050 Paradise Road.

The Backyard Rose Expo is set to take place at 6 p.m. Oct. 27 and features four judges who will explain the dos and don'ts of exhibiting roses.

The other event, which is slated for 6 p.m. Nov. 17, will feature Cooperative Extension faculty member Bob Morris, who will speak about pest control.

LA ISLA UNIFORMS CELEBRATES NINE YEARS

La Isla Uniforms, 967 E. Sahara Ave., donated $3,815 to Dress for Success Southern Nevada, 125 Las Vegas Blvd. South, Sept. 21, in recognition of the store's ninth anniversary.

La Isla Uniforms celebrated its ninth anniversary from Aug. 26 to Sept. 3 by donating 9 percent of all sales to the nonprofit organization. The money will benefit disadvantaged women in need of professional attire.

GAY AND LESBIAN CENTER TO HONOR
THOSE WHO CONTRIBUTED TO COMMUNITY

The Gay & Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada is set to host its 17th honorarium at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 4 in the Octavius Ballroom at Caesars Palace, 3570 Las Vegas Blvd. South.

WARD 5 MEETING TO DISCUSS MASTER PLAN

Ward 5 Las Vegas City Councilman Ricki Y. Barlow plans a neighborhood meeting at 6 p.m. today at the Doolittle Community Center, 1950 N. J St.

Residents will receive information on the community master plan and an update on projects in Ward 5. Barlow seeks feedback on the projects, too.

SITE PLAN FOR HISTORIC WESTSIDE
SCHOOL TO BE UNVEILED

The city of Las Vegas plans to unveil its site plan for the Historic Westside School at its final community meeting from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 25 at the Doolittle Community Center, 1950 N. J St.

The final master plan, which is designed by KME Architects with the public's recommendations for uses and amenities, includes restoration plans of the school's historic features and the hope for reuse as a community gathering place.

The plan outlines several features, including a plaza for outdoor events, offices, retail space, an art sculpture, a bookstore, an exhibit hall and facilities for KCEP Radio. Construction drawings will be the next step in the process after the meeting.

SENIORS OFFERED FREE MEETINGS
WITH ATTORNEYS OCT. 26

Senior citizens can meet with a local attorney for a 15-minute period at no cost from 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 26 at the East Las Vegas Community & Senior Center, 250 N. Eastern Ave.

Participants must be Clark County residents and at least 60 years old. The event is part of National Pro Bono Week, which promotes the idea of finding more attorneys willing to accept cases without compensation.

MAYOR'S URBAN DESIGN AWARD
NOMINEES SOUGHT

Nominations for the sixth annual Mayor's Urban Design Awards will be accepted through Nov. 4.

Winners will be projects that exemplify sustainability, livability, safety, conservation and more.

The four award categories are buildings and their environs, public places, historic preservation/adaptive reuse and public art. City Mayor Carolyn Goodman will present the winners at the State of the City address in April 2012.

Nomination forms can be picked up on the third floor of the Development Services Center, 333 N. Rancho Drive, or at lasvegasnevada.gov/muda.

CITY CLOSES RAFAEL RIVERA COMMUNITY CENTER IN BID AIMED AT EFFICIENCY

The Rafael Rivera Community Center, 2900 Stewart Ave., closed its doors Sept. 1 in an attempt by the city of Las Vegas to save costs and be more efficient, city spokeswoman Diana Paul said.

The community center is one of three buildings that city officials are soliciting proposals for to either purchase or lease.

The other two properties are the site of the Nevada State Museum's old facility in Lorenzi Park, 3333 W. Washington Ave., and the Downtown Senior Services Center, 310 S. Ninth St., near Las Vegas Academy.

Paul said that all activities and classes have been moved to the East Las Vegas Community/Senior Center, 250 N. Eastern Ave, and that no programs have been eliminated. Despite the closure, Rafael Rivera Park, 28th Street and Stewart Avenue, will remain open and park reservations will be unaffected.

Clark County building department Town Hall meeting set

The Clark County Building Department has scheduled a town hall meeting from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Clark County Building Department presentation room, 4701 W.
