YOUTH SOCCER TOURNAMENT PLANNED

The annual Las Vegas Mayor's Cup International Showcase, the largest international youth soccer tournament in the country, is planned for Presidents Day weekend, Saturday through Monday. A record 358 youth soccer teams from around the world are expected to compete. More than 6,400 soccer players ages 14 to 19, from seven foreign countries and 23 states, will square off in soccer fields around the valley. The event is co-hosted by the city of Las Vegas and the Downtown Las Vegas Soccer Club and is expected to attract at least 121 college soccer coaches and recruiters from across the country to scout for both male and female athletes. Spectator admission and parking are free at all games.

Matches are set to begin at 8:40 a.m. on artificial turf and 10 a.m. on grass fields each day; a total of 38 fields will be used. Play will continue until 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the following locations:

Bettye Wilson Soccer Complex, 7353 Eugene Ave., 10 fields (tournament headquarters and location of college coaches/recruiters)

Kellogg Zaher Sports Complex, 7901 W. Washington Ave., 11 fields

Ed Fountain Park, 1400 N. Decatur Blvd., five fields

Teton Trails Park, Grand Teton Drive at Thom Boulevard, two fields

Centennial Hills Park, 7101 N. Buffalo Drive, two fields

Freedom Park, 850 N. Mojave Road, two fields

McCarran Marketplace Park, 5800 Surrey St., two fields

Las Vegas Sports Park, 1400 N. Rampart Blvd., one field

All championship games will be played on Monday at the Bettye Wilson Soccer Complex, with start times from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Individual medals are offered for first and second place; team trophies will be awarded to first-place teams in each age group. Medals and trophies will be presented to winning teams following each championship game, beginning about 11 a.m. Monday and continuing to approximately 4 p.m. All teams placing first through fifth receive points toward their overall team ranking.

Stephanie St. DuBarry has an extensive background in footwear, sports medicine, running and triathlons. The public is invited to attend and learn about barefoot running.

BASKETBALL OFFICIATING WORKSHOP SCHEDULED THROUGH MARCH 5

Teens 15 to 17 who would like to learn the behind-the-scenes aspects of basketball can attend an entry-level basketball officiating workshop from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Mondays through March 5 at Cambridge Recreation Center, 3930 Cambridge St. Cost is $27.

Participants will learn how to operate the clock and scoreboard, what it takes to become a good basketball referee, rules and regulations of the game, how to report foul calls to the scorer's table and referee terminology, symbols and court presence.

Graduates of the program will have the opportunity to referee basketball games in the Development Basketball Program for second- through fifth- graders. Games are scheduled to begin March 10.

VOLLEYBALL LEAGUE REGISTRATION OPEN

A coed recreational volleyball league for adults is open for registration. Games will run from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays through Wednesday at Dula Gym, 441 E. Bonanza Road. The cost is $100 per team. Two matches are played each night. A tournament will be played at the end of the league with all participants. All team captains will receive a captain's packet at the time of registration with rules, schedules and rosters. Rosters must be completed by the second week of play. ADULT RACQUETBALL LEAGUES ONGOING

Adult racquetball leagues have begun at the Minker Sports Complex, 275 N. Mojave Road.

Intermediate/Advanced singles league are from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Mondays.

Intermediate/Advanced singles league are from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays.

Ladder League is from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursdays.

Leagues run for six weeks, plus an end-of-season tournament.

The costs are $25 for nonmembers and $5 for members.
