COLLEGIATE MASTERS EVENT COMING TO SOUTHERN HIGHLANDS GOLF CLUB

Spectators will be the first to see the new rising stars for the PGA Tour during the annual Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters event March 8-11 at Southern Highlands Golf Club, 1 Robert Trent Jones Lane.

The 2012 Collegiate Masters field at the Southern Highlands Golf Club includes: Arizona State University; Duke University; New Mexico State University; Oklahoma State University; Stanford University; Texas A&M University; Texas Christian University; Texas Tech University; the University of Alabama; the University of California-Berkley; the University of California, Los Angeles; the University of Florida; the University of Nevada, Las Vegas; the University of Southern California; and the University of Texas.

ADAPTIVE RECREATION PROGRAM RECEIVES $5,000 GRANT

The city of Las Vegas Adaptive Recreation Program has been awarded a $5,000 grant from the National Recreation and Park Association's 2012 Parks: Return and Restore program. The city's Adaptive Recreation Program was selected to receive the funding to support local community programs and opportunities for disabled veterans and members of the military.

As a result of this grant, no-cost enrollment for injured military personnel in adaptive activities will be available while grant funds last. The programs include a wide array of activities that offer a fun way to stay fit, including recreation and outdoor/adventure experiences, fishing clinics, one-on-one swim lessons, aquatic therapy and a seasonal golf program.

Wheelchair Sports provides opportunities in sports training and competitions throughout Southern Nevada in basketball, tennis, football, power soccer, quad rugby and over-the-line.

The city's Adaptive Recreation Program, which is part of the Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services Department, levels the playing field for people with disabilities, giving them the opportunity to participate in recreational activities. Through activity modifications and special equipment, disabled athletes are able to play alongside their non-disabled peers.

BASKETBALL OFFICIATING WORKSHOP SCHEDULED THROUGH MONDAY

Teens 15 to 17 who would like to learn the behind-the-scenes aspects of basketball can attend an entry-level basketball officiating workshop from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Cambridge Recreation Center, 3930 Cambridge St. Cost is $27.

Participants will learn how to operate the clock and scoreboard, what it takes to become a good basketball referee, rules and regulations of the game, how to report foul calls to the scorer's table and referee terminology, symbols and court presence.

Graduates of the program will have the opportunity to referee basketball games in the Development Basketball Program for second- through fifth- graders. Games are scheduled to begin March 10.

YOUTH FLAG FOOTBALL LEAGUE SIGN-UPS UNDER WAY

Spring youth flag football sign-ups have started for children ages 6-14 at the Cimarron Rose Community Center, 5591 N. Cimarron Road. ADULT RACQUETBALL LEAGUES ONGOING

Adult racquetball leagues have begun at the Minker Sports Complex, 275 N. Mojave Road.

Intermediate/Advanced singles league are from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Mondays.

Novice singles league are from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays.

Intermediate/Advanced singles league are from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays.

Ladder League is from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursdays.

Leagues run for six weeks, plus an end-of-season tournament.

The costs are $25 for nonmembers and $5 for members.
