Locomotives to kick off season

The Las Vegas Locomotives United Football League team is set to play its first game of the season at 5 p.m. Saturday against the Omaha Nighthawks at Sam Boyd Stadium, 7000 E. Russell Road. Senior Rodeo finals are this week

The Senior Pro Rodeo National Finals are scheduled to running all day and much of the night Wednesday through Saturday at Horseman's Park, 5800 E. Flamingo Road. RED ROCK 5K SET FOR Saturday

The Red Rock 5K is planned for 8 a.m. Saturday at the Red Rock Country Club, 2250 Red Springs Drive.

The walk for charity portion is scheduled to begin at 8:45 a.m.

New-Com and Ryno Running have teamed up with the golf club for a safe, scenic course using the golf course's concrete cart path.

Entry fee for the walk is $25 and benefits After-School All-Stars Las Vegas. The 5K entry fee is $30. Cash prizes will be awarded.

Bootleg Canyon trail ride planned

Nevada's first 24-hour relay cycling event "24 Hours of Bootleg Canyon" is scheduled for Oct. 29 at Bootleg Canyon Mountain Bike Park in Boulder City. The race includes a BBQ and bonfire with live rock 'n' roll music. To register or for more information, go to 24hoursofbootleg.com.

Lake Mead Triathlon scheduled

In recognition of Veterans Day, the inaugural Lake Mead Triathlon is scheduled for Nov. 12 at the Lake Mead National Recreation Area in Boulder City. The Lake Mead Triathlon is the last triathlon for the West Coast and benefits Operation Rebound. BLM TO HOST FEE-free DAYS

The Bureau of Land Management, in conjunction with other agencies within the Department of the Interior, will waive recreation-related fees for visitors to the National System of Public Lands for National Public Lands Day on Nov. 11-13 for the Veterans Day holiday weekend.

These fee-free days also apply to areas managed within the BLM's National Landscape Conservation System.

Other fees, such as overnight camping, cabin rentals and group day use, will remain in effect. For more information, visit blm.gov.

Mayor's Cup International Showcase nominated for award

The Las Vegas Mayor's Cup International Showcase is being recommended for the prestigious international Peace and Sport Award. In a message from the Consulate of Monaco in Las Vegas to the city and the Downtown Las Vegas Soccer Club, consul Jonathan Warren announced that he was placing the soccer tournament in the running for the honor.

The Peace and Sport Award was founded by Olympic pentathlete Joel Bouzou and officially recognized by Prince Albert II of Monaco. The purpose of the honor is "to elevate humanity through the universal interaction of friendly competition and sportsmanship."

The Las Vegas Mayor's Cup International Showcase is co-hosted each February over Presidents Day weekend by the city of Las Vegas and the Downtown Las Vegas Soccer Club. Last year more than 6,000 youth soccer players, ages 14 to 19, from eight foreign countries and 26 states took part. The tournament has become the largest youth soccer tournament in the country.

The tournament originally started as a means of bringing youth players from Rosarito, Mexico, to Las Vegas so the young players could share a passion for soccer. Since then, the tournament has grown into a major youth sports event, attracting nearly 150 college soccer coaches and recruiters. The Mayor's Cup also provides a significant boost to the local economy. Sporting events and programs from around the world have been recommended for Peace and Sport Awards in at least five categories. The winners are expected to be announced in Monaco on Oct. 27.

Dew Tour set to hit Hard Rock

World-class skateboarders and BMX riders are set to compete in The Dew Tour Championships Oct. 13-16 at the Hard Rock Hotel, 4455 Paradise Road. Competition types include Skate Street, Skate Vert, BMX Vert, BMX Park and BMX Dirt contests. The schedule is as follows:

Friday: A free FMX Best Whip contest presented by Hart & Huntington will feature Las Vegas native Carey Hart in the afternoon, followed by the Skate Street finals at the Joint with a special musical guest.

Saturday: BMX Dirt finals on a technical course designed by Las Vegas native and MTV host TJ Lavin.

Sunday: A party at the Hard Rock Hotel with the Vert Ramp built over the pool for the BMX Vert and Skate Vert finals.

Racquetball Leagues gearing up

Minker Adult Racquetball Leagues are set to begin registration Monday until leagues are full at the Minker Sports Complex, 275 N. Mojave Road. Costs are $5 for members and $25 for nonmembers per league. Games are set from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, Oct. 17 through Nov. 28.

Ward 4's 11th annual Las Vegas Walk 'n' Roll/5K Run for ALS of Nevada is set for Oct. 15 at Police Memorial Park, 3250 Metro Academy Way. The event is for all ages. On-site registration begins 6 a.m.; the 5K run starts at 8 a.m.; and the Walk 'n' Roll starts at 8:15 a.m. An awards ceremony and tree dedication are to follow. Tennis alliance to host tournament to benefit Golden Rainbow

The Gay & Lesbian Tennis Alliance is set to host a tennis tournament Friday through Saturday at Darling Tennis Center, 7901 W. Washington Ave., with proceeds benefiting Golden Rainbow.

The deadline for player entry was Oct. 2. A draw party will be held to determine the tournament bracket from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at Charlie's Las Vegas, 5012 Arville St., and all players are invited to attend. Desert Breeze indoor pool celebrates 10-year anniversary

Mayor's Cup soccer tournament set

The Las Vegas Mayor's Cup International Soccer Tournament is scheduled for Oct. 28-30. Team registration was $595 for 10- to 15-year-olds and ended Sept. 6. The platinum-ranked City of Las Vegas Mayor's Cup International Soccer Tournament is co-hosted by the city of Las Vegas and the Downtown Las Vegas Soccer Club. Last year's tournament featured 290 youth soccer teams from 11 different U.S. states, as well as Canada and Mexico. The event offers gold and silver levels for boys and girls ages 10-15. Teams are guaranteed three games. Individual awards are offered for first and second place. The Mayor's Cup is also the only tournament in Southern Nevada that offers a TOPSoccer flight. southern highlands to host
charity walk and fall festival

Southern Highlands is scheduled to host its seventh annual fall festival 5K and one-mile walk on Oct. 22. The race is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Goett Family Park, along Southern Highlands Parkway, south of Somerset Hills.

The festival, which is free, starts after the walk.

Registration prices for the race vary based on when you sign up and for which race.

Proceeds will benefit the Southern Highlands Charitable Foundation, the Southern Highlands Boys & Girls Club, the Down Syndrome Organization of Southern Nevada and We R Community.

Last year's event raised more than $100,000.
